First corn snake... newbie looking for advice

BTW, thank you Alicat! I was trying so hard for everything to be perfect and I just wasn't aware of the thermostat/thermometer... :( I am really worried!

91° can burn and kill your snake.
Put a towel between your heat mat and the bottom of your tank.
I would normally say to just turn the heat off but you fed your snake, so it needs the heat.
Putting a towel between the heat and tank should lower the temps a few degrees.

Check it a few hours later to make sure.

I completely agree about getting plastic bowls and putting holes in the tops. It cost me .25 a bowl and they are the favorite hides of all my snakes- the other most loved hides are the underside of doggy water bowls (which I buy at the dollar store or Walmart) and empty tissue boxes.

Personally, I would keep the rheostate on it until the new one comes in and do as Naagas said put the towel in there but make you constantly keep track of the temps.

The heating mat is attatched to my tank. Should I put a towel or paper towels between the inside of the glass and the substrate?

She's been on top of the substrate inside the hide all day, just to the left of where the heating mat should end.

I hate to disturb her but I'll put a dishrag down inside the tank and then the substrate and then the hide she's been favoring until the new one gets here.

I'll look into the bowls too tomorrow. I have a Dollar Store and a Dollar Tree right down the street. ;)

What are the temps in your house? I would unplug and leave it. It is far better for your snake to be on the cool side than be to hot. Try not to handle or move for the next few days to a week since she is trying to digest and adjust to a new home.

The temp varies as it's been pretty cold (for me) here. My desktop says it's 54 outside today, but it usually gets to 60 through the day.

I did move a few things around and put the towel in last night. She's in the same hide as far as I can tell even though I moved it to the cold side. I'm going to try to get another cheap one for the warm and see if she moves to that, but I think she'll be okay until I get the thermostat. She was very alert still, seems she just wants peace and quiet to digest.

i just use a desktop lamp dimmer for both of my heating pads. it takes a little while to get it dialed in but when you to it should be fine. once i had it set i put take around the slide switch so it wouldnt get moved.
i have digital thermometers on both tanks right ontop of the pad. their usually from 79-86 degrees depending how hot of cold the room is. right now one 83.7 and ones 84.5. their only about ten bucks at home depot.

I would peel off the UTH...
Be careful, your baby can get under a towel inside the tank.

Turning off the UTH is the next safest option.

Too cold is better than too hot.

I'll unplug it when I get home and go by home depot for the thermometer. I ordered a $30 thermostat from Amazon since I prefer knowing the exact temp. :) thank you everyone. Sorry for being such a snake noob. I'm really looking forward to bonding with her. :)

No need to apologize :) Everyone starts somewhere! (I promise you that I had the exact same set up that you did when I first got my snakes!)

I just have one last question... When will it be safe to attempt holding her? How should I go about lifting her from the viv? Thanks :)

I would give her a few days to let her get use to her new home. Most of us say no handling for 5-7 days when you first get a snake. Then when you are ready just scoop her up. She may try to get away but she will calm down after a couple of minutes.

Thanks so much. I'll give her an extra day or 2 since these last few were so hectic. ;) Also, another question :p Will she always hide at night, too? (I've been up until 11ish, that's when I go to bed... and I only saw her come out once the past 3 days). When I do check on her in the morning, she seems very alert, though! :D I just want to know if she will become more active once she adjusts.

Thanks again ^^

She will. Usually they hide a lot as babies but once they start getting use to you and the noises around the house they get better. I find mine have very specific times of day, evening or night. I can tell what time of day it is by which snake is out and about. lol

Good news. Looks like she was hiding away yesterday from the ruckus/having been fed. She kinda sat near the entrance of the inside of the hide for a bit. I'm sure she's waiting for me to go to bed. When inspecting the viv this morning, I saw where she had explored in the log, too! I'm so proud of her. :D

Is there any kind of procedure to handling her? I'm thinking to try around Monday, since it will have been slightly over a week. :) I am really scared of being bitten, even though it doesn't hurt. I don't want her to sense my fear either so I'm trying to be a brave owner, too. ^^; I imagine its like a hamster bite. (Well robohamster... I have one and an orange tabby so I've had my share of animal bites now and then.) I just was wondering if you had any advice on what NOT to do and the best way to approach her. I don't want to touch her near her tail because usually that startles them and scares them, putting them on the defensive.

Also, any tips for how long and how to handle her? I'm probably overthinking this, but I don't want to handle her too long, especiallly at first.
