Ugh, I just looked closer at the pics...
First of all, the snake is fed on substrate that can easily be swallowed along with the prey, possibly causing impaction...and death.

Second....there are ONLY 3 reasons to feed live.
1) You are an uneducated keeper and don't know the damage a live rodent can do to a snake. A mouse can easily take out a snakes eye trying to defend itself, and a rat can do FAR more damage than that. And it would happen in the blink of an eye and there would be nothing you could do about it.
2) You know a live rodent can hurt your snake, but you prefer a sick thrill over the welfare of your snake and feel nothing about the suffering of an animal that is nearly as smart as a dog. (Yes, rats ARE that smart)
3)Your snake will only eat live food, but if that is the case he should be switched over as fast as possible.

I guess the question is...Are you cruel, stupid or both?

You fed your snake a LIVE RAT???
Why in the world would you do a thing like that?

Woah, I didn't even realize it was a LIVE RAT until I read closer. Just to add my 2 cents on top of Starsevol's: I know people who wear glove when handling rats, and pretty thick gloves too. I don't feed my snake live, and I never will :), but I have been bitten by mice, and it can be quite a wound. I can only imagine what a rat can do to a snake...

A rat has a bite pressure of up to 7,000 PSI, so it wouldn't be fun for anybody to get ganked. Particularly since they can deliver rapid multiple bites.

So besides the Live = major bad...please take a look at your choice of bedding. Whatever that stuff it it looks like mulch. That kind of bedding can create a dust that can harm the snake. It can also get the dust and or slivers under the belly scales. Yucky stuff. You would be much better off to get aspen or newspaper for them....and it would be more comfortable too. :)
I know it might seem as if people are jumping down your throat, but really we are just worried about the snake. It really is a beautiful snake! I love the colors and he seems like he loves a big meal...just make it a dead one next time! *wink*

I have to admit, although I understand and sympathise with the motives for live feeding, my first thought was that you took a big risk feeding a live rat. They are big powerful rodents which very sharp teeth. If the snake missed or was inexperienced or nervous the rodent could have started nibbling the snake out of curiosity or even attacked it. It's a good job your snake knew what to do, and that you didn't leave them unattended. The rat is also a big prey item for a snake this size. It would be fine if dead, but to expect a snake this size to grapple with a rat is asking a lot.
Next time try a mouse.

I really love the colors on your snake :) I am not going to jump on your for your choices and I don't knwo the circumstances as to why you have decided to feed live and to use that type of bedding. First off, just so you know, it is better to feed F/T mice and rats than live. Live rodents are more likely to carry parasites and severely injure your snake. It is pretty easy to switch them over to F/T, although it may take a few tries for some. If you do feed live, make sure you are always present and never leave the two alone without supervision. Live rodents can also scratch and cut your snake while in the snakes grasp as a defense.
As for the bedding. While what you are using may look better than other beddings, you have to think about how safe it may be. Your snake can swallow or injest this bedding during a feed and become impacted. If your snake is impacted it can cause it many problems, including not being able to poop which will require immediate vet care and may cause death. It is better to feed on newspaper or paper towel to avoid this problem.

I don't want you to feel un_welcome here. We just all want whats best for your snake. And I am not going to judge your decisions as you may have just been misinformed.
But thats what we are all here for, is to help educate others.

Your snake is beautiful, I hope from now on you will make the best decisions for its health.

no people im not stupid maybe a little uneducated on this whole thing and no i wasnt looking for some kind sick thrill yes the rat was alive but trust me there was no fight in the thing (put it in a pillow case and gave it a good smack against the sidewalk first) the snake was bought from a person not a store and he has always been fed live mice ive tried frozen he wont take them the is called forest bed its made by t rex it says its completely organic and dust free and harmless if ingested the guy at the pet store said it was his # seller im sorry if it isnt up to par with some of you more experienced snake fans but experienced comments like those ive received over this doesnt really help you say that the aspen bedding is better fine i will get some of that .

*TWO THUMBS UP* You will be getting rep from me for this post! :) Jumping down people's throats doesn't help, I find people are for more likely to listen to you if you aren't yelling at them.

As for the "live" feeding, to me, feeding a stunned animal (if stunned properly) is acceptable. My big male ONLY eats live, I have been struggling to get him to eat f/t for MONTHS and he just won't do it, the ONLY thing he eats is stunned or near dead (like in final death throws) mice (NOT rats either mind you, he doesn't eat rats either! lol).

That really is an AWESOME snake! A model candy cane! And as for the size of the prey, it looks okay, it doesn't look like a fully grown rat to me and the snake is clearly, very large. My big girl (over 500g) eats rats about that size no problem! :)

Well we didn't realize that it was stunned. That's good, that way it can go biting at your snake.

Forest bed: As far as what I gathered, it's bad. I know it looks cool, you can buy it compressed and expand it with water, but my guess is that that would leave it too moist. Also, it's said to represent jungle climates, and also from what I have gathered, it say nothing about being safe for corn snakes. I guess I don't have a lot of room to speak, as I have never used it, but remember this: Pet store owners normally aren't there to have a zo, they sell animals, and sometimes they don't care about the welfare of the animals.

I'm glad you're getting aspen. Aspen works great.

When it comes to stupidity and cruelty I will NEVER be done. Deal with it!

I am glad the op uses stunned prey for an animal that won't eat thawed. I wish he had said it from the beginning though!

I think the point is that you didn't wait to see if the person was being stupid or cruel, you simply jumped down their throat. Clearly the OP is new at this, but has been trying to do the best they can.

You have a gorgeous snake - I hope that you continue to post on the site! I would recommend aspen or newspaper - and if you feed inside the viv then I would go with newspaper - cheaper and no fear of digesting it!

How big is the snake by the way? He looks huge in the pictures, but maybe thats just me!

Well, when someone fails to mention that the prey item is stunned, and uses the words "he's killing it now"...what other conclusion can possibly be drawn??

Stupid and cruel people run rampant on YouTube. I would wager that true animal lovers are outnumbered by the stupid and cruel by at least 2 to 1. Stupidity can be forgiven, but not cruelty. And if you checked my sig, you'd see I have a soft spot for rats.

Besides, there are enough nice fair-minded people on this site to make up for the likes of me!

I'd agree with you there - there are more stupid and cruel people then animal lovers. And I can see how unclear information can be frustrating and leave plenty of room for the unknown. I admit my first reaction to the post was similiar.
Glad to see I didn't offend you too much with my comment. :)
