First snake, tips?

Thanks guys! Lovely idea about the plants! Once he's all set up with the necessities, I'll get him some branches and vines to make things a bit more fun :D I checked the shipping and Amazon says Feb. 28-March 5. I'm hoping it comes before the 2nd cause that's as long as the shelter is willing to hold him and I don't wanna loose him and my $75. They seemed pretty ticked I didn't buy the supplies from them :( I don't know what I'm gonna do if the top doesn't come on time D:

I'm an Amazon Prime member because I order a lot of supplies for my business so the free 2 day shipping is great for me. I only order items that are prime eligible and always get them in 2 days sometimes 1.

If you order online a lot I'd definitely look into an Amazon Prime membership. I also get free streaming of videos and free kindle books with prime membership.

LOVE LOVE LOVE my Prime membership! It was what I asked from my mom for a Christmas present, to renew my membership. I just wish they sold groceries...

Lovely setup, Drybgerg! Do you have hides at both ends?

Redcloud, since you are getting a bigger guy, some of the plants I recommended won't hold up to their weight and girth. You might have to stick with longer vines and pieces of wood, the dainty setups I have for my littler ones would get mowed down by 800g Bootsie.

Drybgerg, that set up looks really nice! Thanks for sharing the how-to! Too bad something like that doesn't work for adult corns.

As far as snakes getting "knotted up" in the plants, I don't think that would ever happen. However, I have seen stories about snakes that got themselves caught in narrow places. For example, plastic tubs that have handles molded into the design. If a snake just barely fits in that little ledge, they can possibly get stuck. I've seen one post about that, and since it happened when the owner was away for a weekend, the snake was pretty badly injured once it was found, but as I recall it did recover ok. Or, some of the "vine" type artificial plants are made with a sort of plastic chain as the main stem, and if a snakes goes through the links, they can possibly get caught. So do keep an eye out for that sort of thing.

It would work with bigger hides. I've had no problems with my plants and adults, they can smash them down and they pop back up. I like to have a climbing branch as well which isn't shown in the above photos.

I do have the chain style vines you mentioned with my yearling who is 2'6" and 80 grams. He does go through the chain and I will be replacing them, and I'll move those vines to the hatchling/juvenile viv.

Pictures show Kernel going through the chain vine. I don't recommend anyone use the chain vine even though it flexes a lot and like I said I will be replacing it in the near future.

Another picture shows climbing branch.

Ah I'll be staying far away from those chain vines then! They look like a major hazard for a snake who can just squeeze himself in. What lovely photos drybgerg! I love the idea of the large branch in the middle! Makes me wish my tank was bigger so I could fit all that awesome stuff without cluttering!

You got a 29 gallon right? It's 18" tall IIRC so you could still put a climbing branch up a little higher. I've done climbing branches with suction cups on each end, this allows you to get it up off the ground of the viv and the snake can still get on it. Put a dab of vegetable oil on the suction cups and they won't come off without a fight!!

I don't worry much about clutter, I'm still going to add additional hides and vines to my newest viv.

RC, you might be able to find a friendly snake you can get shipped for a better price than you are being quoted from the rescue. I also wouldn't worry about the store's babies being a little nippy/flighty, baby snakes can be that way.

Drybgerg yes it's a 29G. I guess if I put the branch a bit higher up it would still leave a bit a room for him on the bottom. Great tip with the suction cup, I was wondering how to keep them from slipping off! Chip, I've searched around the internet and getting a almost full grown snake for under $75 with shipping is pretty much impossible lol Besides, I've already put my money down on this guy and it's non-refundable :D

Oooh, I see what you mean about the "chain" vine. I wanted to go look for some vine-y cover for my bigger kids, I will stay away from the chain gang.

But for little guys like yours, they always seem to be able to slip through the smallest of openings, so yours is really beautiful and useful.

Not really. Such things are just seldom advertised. A well-timed post on this forum could have gotten you something, I promise! For the right situation, I'll gift a snake if someone pays shipping. But seeing as how you've put down a deposit, you may want to go ahead and get the one you've looked at.

Ah well xD If I ever get another tank and set up I'll check here first. Not too bummed cause at least the money is going to a good cause.
