Gay snakes...

I love my snakes. gay or straight. I think I was just hoping people would say something along the lines of, "If you bought from a reputable breeder, then he wouldn't make that mistake. Your snakes are gay." I have done research, I am aware that keeping snakes together is a bad idea, since they might eat each other and mate. And for my choice of words, I was not trying to be cute, funny or any other thing, I was just typing my thoughts. Sorry for not being suave enough for you all. I just wanted some feedback. But seriously, if that was truly offensive to some, maybe lighten up?

If you were offended by everyone's responses, you should've been clearer in the beginning--that they weren't housed together, that you KNOW these consequences, that it isn't a joke... Don't get mad at those having fun with it, and don't get pissy because you didn't get the answer you wanted. Even the most reputable breeder makes sexing mistakes sometimes. It's a very real possibility that the breeder in question made a mistake. If you saw hemipenes when your '07 started trying to "mate" your '08, then chances are there WAS a mistake when the breeder sexed the '08.

I'd suggest getting them probed by your vet... Then you can tell us whether they're horny or homo. =)
 
In Kevin McuCurly's ( pretty much started the BP morphs) book on BP's he claims that known male Bp's will mate upon occasion.
 
Since even reputable breeders will occasionally make mistakes, I think everyone WAS trying to lighten the mood a little. The choice of words was somewhat funny.

Since the deed is already done, and you have already received advice about it, I don't see the harm in having a little fun with the subject. Everyone can use a smile these days - wherever it can be found. It is part of the camaraderie that makes the site enjoyable, IMHO.

MeanGreen, do not change a thing. Ever. (Except maybe the co-habbing part.) We are just being a little silly and a lot friendly. Speaking for myself, you seem like a great guy with a sly wit, and I took no offense by any means. You just provided a subject that was ripe for humor.
This is 2009, and I'm sure you'll even run into gay people on the site, who are indeed sophisticated enough to poke a little fun at the subject, believe it or not.

Relax and enjoy the camaraderie.
 
Yup, I did NOT finish everyone's reply to this thread so excuse me if I am repeating everyone (yet in this situation...repeating might be need for future people to read)

First off, never have your snakes out together for "play time", they dont need it. Exercise, yes! But never together. Just like you dont put two snakes in the same bin to eat or while you are cleaning bins or vivs. Things do and will happen.

As for "gay" snakes. I just dont think so. Domination...YES. That can happen with both males as well as females. You need to know for sure what sexes your snakes are. Breeders can and do make mistakes. BUT we never tell anyone to put their snakes together for any other reason than to breed. IF there were truly "hooked up", you need a vet to check your female (blizzard?). You might loose that Blizzard. I do wish the best and hopefully she will not produce any eggs. Is there a snake breeder in your area by chance? Maybe they or the vet could probe both your snakes for you to be 100% sure of their gender.

Yes, the way you stated things, was bit raw! Your situation is similar to others we have all tried to give advise and help to. We as a group try to keep it on the light side of things. Hope you can understand that OP.

Hopefully you dont loose that Blizzard to being egg bound in about 30 days.

P.S. I am sorry you have a gay snake.He is probably not gay though.I am sure there is a reason.naturally the snake knows that it needs a mate of the opposite sex in order to repoduce. Which is the goal of all species.To Repoduce and Strengthen their gene pool.So I'm sure its not a pleasure or even a romance thing.But you should not let them "Play" together anymore..Thats would be a good idea.

Now from what I hear the reasoning behind this is, the gartersnake article, its not a mating thing at all. These smaller males will use this trickery to actually warm up during the spring. These guys will emit the pheromone to attract other males to form a mating ball. All these black snakes together absorb the strong spring sunlight that helps warm up the smaller males. Once they are warmed up they go on their merry way.
