hai hey hi!

sooooo.....i'm new =]

i have a baby sunglow named Clementine.......i'm pretty sure she's a girl. not completely though. lol. haven't checked. i've had her for about 6 months.

i'm having trouble with her because she's at the size where she should be eating pinkies....but she doesn't even give them the time of day. she'll only eat bigger mice, but it kinda worries me. i'm still learning about her and my worries possibly come from just lack of knowledge. so that's why i'm here.

i know she wouldn't bother eating anything she knows she can't eat.......but with the size of the mice she eats, i'm afraid of what could possibly happen.

so can anyone tell me what can happen when a snake eats something too big? can her stomach or skin tear? would she actually try eating something that's too big? maybe the mice aren't too big?

i'm not sure what else to feed her. i don't think she'll go for crickets....but i suppose i could try.

i don't mind the time it takes her to eat. but it looks kinda painful and i'm amazed she gets them down.

anyway.....thank you for any help you can offer =]

You need to feed her a mouse that is one or one and a half times in diameter as your snake is at her widest point. You can cause great harm by feeding too large a mouse, and your snake _will_ eat a mouse big enough to be harmful. If the mouse is so big she can't digest it before it rots inside her she will regurgitate it. This is very bad because she iwll lose all the good bacteria in her stomach. Then, she can't digest the next meal! Snakes can and do die from regurges.

oh wow....that's good to know. thank you nanci!

oh, and also.....
the only things that would be about that size to her are pinkies.....which she won't eat. should i give crickets a try?

No. Only feed it mice/rats. You should post a picture or even measure her diameter to make sure of size. And remember, it's 1 to 1 1/2 the size of her /widest/ point.

Try snipping a little cut into the pink's skull! And you're making it hot, like 102F, right??

the same happened to me and these is how i fix it i went to petco they have the smallest pinky's i have ever seen then heat them with hot tap water as hot as it gets, cut the head off and split it in 2 i also open the pinkys belly and put it with my tatzu in a small toperware then i put the 2 pices of the pinky oh i place the tuperware in the hot side of the terrarium and i left them all night and by the morning the pinky was gone.

rawr

and as for putting food INTO the tank as mentioned in another reply......no. but thank you anyway =]

Haha no, braining is for F/T mice. How big is the smallest mouse it will take and how big is the largest width of the snake? Just take the diameter of both, I'm sure the larger meals it's taking are fine!

ehhhhh....the smallest mouse it will take is def larger than 1 1/2 its size. after she eats, her skin looks like its about to split. i'll try braining though. sounds like a plan.

sooo how do i thaw it? definitely not a microwave, right? haha

you know........i'm going to make another post right now. i'll be right back

hm...

well i was going to post in the classifieds...but i guess i can't.

*sigh* :eatsmiley

i think it was a mistake for me to get this snake. i'm obviously not cut out for this. i'd like to go back to a bigger snake, please and thank you!

and would anyone [well equipped with the patience and knowledge of raising a baby corn] like to give my sweet Clementine a new home?
i'm sure we all know that not everyone has what it takes to be able to raise a snake and give it everything it would need to have a healthy, happy life. unfortunately, i'm one of those people...at least for this snake, anyway.

she isn't safe with me.....i'm ill equipped.

i'm not giving up...

i've just come to the conclusion that a baby cornsnake is not for me. its more work than i have time for. i'm more of a python kinda person. i don't want to have to deal with braining, or thawing

and i don't really want to try what urban suggested. feeding them inside the tank is bad feeding habits, i don't know if you know that or not.

I didn't feed her "inside the tank"i put her in a white toperware closed lid (with holes). i have to put the toperware inside the tank so it'll stay warm since nights are getting preatty cold here in Utah.

ohhhhh ok i see =] i didn't quite understand, i guess, when you explained the first time.

but i am really pretty much done with this snake :awcrap:
