hamster pinky?

i was wondering,if you couldn't get your hands on a mice pinky , would it be okay to use a hamster pinky? or is this out of the question?

I would imagine nutritional content to be similar. You need to be careful with sizes. Only feed your snake food items that are about the same diameter as the snake in the thickest part of the snake. I am saying this because I don't know how big hamster pinkies are.

Switch up when available. You wouldn't want the snake to not want mice, because then you'd have to find a constant supply of hamsters for food then.

i went to...

a local pet store and asked for pinkie mice and the manager told me that he didn't have any and wasn't expecting a shipment for about three days. he then went into a hamster cage and rummaged around for a couple seconds and pulled out a new born hamster and said...i'll sell you this for two dollars. i was just like "ummm...no, i'll go somewhere else." i'm sure they are perfectly fine and have the same level of nutrients a snake needs that is provided for them in mice, but NO way am i feeding norbie a hamster...i've had too many as pets, can't do that.

I actually had a pet store give me a hamster pinky free because some new moron employee sold the mom. My snake ate it no problem. And as far as the getting a taste for food items that aren't mice and then refusing everything as a result...for the longest time my snake wouldn't eat f/t anything [insert six-month saga here], so over a period of like two months I (mostly out of necessity) fed him a whole variety of food- pinky mice, fuzzy mice, pinky rats, pinky hamster (but all live). Then one day I tried again with the f/t thinking that maybe I'd trick him, since I was changing up his food so often that he'd just think of this as another menu change, and he ate the f/t mousie right up and has been eating f/t like a champ ever since. I'm sure plenty other people could tell you that they switched their snake's food around and it ended up costing them big time because the snake wouldn't eat mice after that, but the switching for me ended up being the best thing that happened to us.

Where are you located? I'll move there and set up shop and retire next year at those prices.

Whoa

Whoa, and I was complaining about paying $20.00 for 20 adult mice. Live or frozen!

Shari,

I just PM you.

I

live in ontario and we can get pinkies for 50 cents 75 cents for fuzzy 1 dollar for hopper/adult its good prices

Wow...some people really like their mice, eh? If I had to pay those prices, I don't believe I would have as many snakes as I do!

RyanR, while those prices aren't terrible if you only have one or two snakes. I think you could do better than that.

I just ordered 225 mice from Big Cheese...pinks, fuzzies and adults. It averaged out to about .36 a piece including shipping and I cringed at that!

Normally I buy locally from breeders or at shows and get pinks for .12 to .15 a piece and no shipping charge! However, I had to supplement this month!

Actually right now, I am in the process of establishing my own breeding colonies.

I think I,m paying too much

I just looked at the reciept from my last order. I paid .50 for large pinks,.64 for med mice, .80 for adult mice, and 1.40 for small rats. That is delivered to my office. I guess you have to pay for convience. If anybody knows of better prices in DFW area I,m all ears.
