Heat help

Alright guys, I need a little help. I've got an under tank heat pad, hooked up to a rheostat. (I wanted the thermostat, but petsmart didnt have one, I'm gonna switch when I get the cash moneys) The temps on the hot side are good, and the temps on the low side are good when I put a light on it, but just under the substrate, on the glass above the pad, the temps get to about 91 degrees. I know this is above 90 degrees, the cut off, but do you guys thing my snake will go all the way down to the glass? He will get here today, and I wouldn't have ordered him but I thought I had everything set up, but seemed to overlook this. Plus, with the light off, the cold side doesnt stay hot enough, even though the hot side seems too hot. I would like to find some way besides the lamp to keep it in the right temps, because I like to sleep, and the viv is in my room ;] Sorry this is a little long winded, and THANKS FOR THE HELP!

A couple edits I overlooked, he gets here tomorrow, so I have some time to tweak. Also, there is plenty of substrate, and the temps get to about 91.5 all the way at the glass, when I bury the probe, but the substrate levels seem to be at a good warm temp. THANKS!

If the temp under the substrate is 91 degrees you need to adjust rheostat to lower the temp just a wee bit. This is the hottest temp that the corn can touch if he wants too. The cool side should work out.
What's your house temp??

As far as I've been told, the temperature at the glass should be 85 - corn snakes definitely exhibit the tendency to burrow, and you don't want to burn the little guy if he does get down there (mine frequently does!).

I'm not sure you really need the light for heat - unless your house is unreasonably cold, I'm pretty sure the cool side is fine. Corns are hardy, as long as you have the UTH temp sorted, they'll be fine. :)

well then im not a fan of the rheostat, because it's all the way on low, so I might just try plugging the heater in to the wall. And my house is at about 67 right now... we are redoing the kitchen so turning the heat on is a huge waste of money. I wouldn't want to burn him! Without the light on the cold side, the temp was in the low 70's. I'll report back with some different stuff tried. Thanks for replying!

low 70's is fine.
Can you place a tile in the the tank above the heat source, that might help lower the temp a bit.

I found the perfect sized tile to put in, and with the pad plugged straight in to the wall, temps went over 100, so I plugged it back in to the rheostat. I guess we'll see if the tile will dissipate the heat enough. Thanks for the tip.

I seem to have found something that works. I placed a large tile over the heat pad, but it was cracked, so it had an irregular side that left some of the heat pad exposed, so I set it all up and measured at the heat pad that was exposed, and got about 84.5, and at the cool end all the way down to the glass didnt get colder than about 71. Do you guys think I am all set? I've been tweaking it and measuring and remeasuring all day!

Thanks for all the help. Anyone know about when fedex usually shows up with over night shipping? I'm so excited!

I'm starting to get a little concerned, its 5.30 and no snake... Does over night ever take this long? I just hope the poor guy/girl isn't stuck somewhere.

Are you sure you weren't supposed to go pick it up at the nearest Fedex freight center at the will call desk?

I'm going to find the nearest fed-ex place and call, but I ordered from SMR, and their website says door-to-door several places. However, it also says "usually next day" or something like that, implying that it MAY take two, so maybe I'm just overreacting.

Good luck. I have never had any problems with delivery from SMR. Do you have a tracking number that you can trace the shipment. Better yet you should call Don at SMR to sure when it was shipped.

For any and all interested, email was the cause of the problem. I called and talked to Don, who didn't get an email from me, but he was so extremely nice about everything, and it is shipping out Monday. He threw in a autographed copy of his book. If anyone needs a snake in the near future, this is my first snake purchase in general, but I would definitely recommend South Mountain Reptiles. Thanks Don!
