Hello From Alabama

My daughter's 5th birthday is next week and she wants a snake. Being only 5, I figured I'd find her something with some color, so I narrowed it down to the milks and corns. I ended up picking out an amber corn yesterday. The pet store is holding it for me for a few days so I don't have to hide it from her for a week.

I've had snakes and other reptiles since I was a kid, but this will be "my" first corn. I did keep a few gray ratsnakes that I'd caught when I was a kid.

Anyway, just thought I'd say hello. It looks like a busy and informative site.

You won't regret getting a corn snake. Milk snakes are pretty, but they are not nearly as friendly as corn snakes and always seem to poop on you when you pick them up. Corns are great! Welcome to the forum!

How so true.... I call mine the poo sprinkler. It use to always spins its tail and poos everywhere. To its credit it has calmed down quite a bit....recently

Welcome to the forums. That's great that you're encouraging your daughter's interest. One suggestion though, as it's recommended to leave your snake alone for about a week to settle, if there's any way you can pick it up early and keep it hidden from her, then it'll be ready to be held by the time you unveil it to your little girl. Best wishes and hope she'll be as excited as you sound about it.

Thanks everyone! Lots of Alabama people here, I see. Also, I'm a dad, not a mom, but thanks all the same. ;)

Welcome to the forums and I also think it is a very kewl gift for your lil girl!

It is also -=very=- nice to see you recognizing that the snake will be primarily your responsibility even though it belongs to your daughter. She was blessed with a wise dad!

I hope you and your daughter enjoy your new slither friend!

With a smile,
Deb

Oh yeah, she's much to young to be left in charge of any animal, though she loves them. I'll be doing all the work, but teaching her about it as we go along so that she CAN care for it properly some day.

And, like I said, although this will be the first corn I've cared for, I'd had many reptiles through the years. I actually have an Egyptian Tortoise, a Mali Uromastyx, and a Bolivian Salmon Tarantula of my own right now.

Here's Pokey:

Cool pets! And welcome to the forum. Corn snakes are great & although you will do the work your daughter will have fun. Snakes are a lot less work than mammals though so she may surprise you in a few years -- I think a responsible 10-12 year old could take care of a corn snake with some light adult supervision.

Neat turtle! Sorry about the mis-gendering. You are a very cool dad then! And a responsible one at that. I can't believe how many posts I see on craigslist a week of "we bought this animal for my child and well she is slacking on her responsibilities so we need to find a new home." That just angers me.
So glad you aren't doing that. I think that animals are a great learning project for a child, but yes, responsibility needs to be on the parents. if the kids do the work, it's a gift!

Man I want a turtle for sure but no room with the hermit crabs, gecko's, frogs and snakes (not including the dogs and cats) I also would love a snake for my birthday (oh yeah I picked up my anery stripe from becky for my birthday last year). Well this years bday is coming up. Enough about me, I tend to do that, LOL and congrats an welcome, we love that you are here with us
