Help converting snake phobes?

Quite honestly, they agreed to it before you got the snake. Unless your lease says otherwise I'd move the snake in w/o telling them and just keep my room locked. But then, I have little patience with people who don't stick to their word.

I had one similar experience involving a cat. I wanted to move my cat down to live with me. I got the approval (in writing for the apt management no less) from all 3 roommates, bought him all his stuff, drove the 8 hours each way home to pick him up. One week in one of my roommates (who had a cat of her own at home) started complaining that she was allergic.

We compromised by my making sure to keep the cat out of her room (keeping him in mine most of the day) and keeping his claws trimmed short so he could not scratch her an cause (she claimed) a rash. She eventually got over it and started letting him in her room to sleep with her.

Conclusion: people are weird, roommates are weirder. They agreed to let you have the snake. Unless you were trying to make them take care of it or violating the original agreement, they need to hold up their end. You can suggest a compromise or two if needed (maybe buy a minifridge off craigslist if they are weirded out by mice in the freezer for instance) but you should not let them backtrack when you did the right thing and asked them first.

Caveat: If you think they would go so far as to do harm to the snake, don't move it in.

My boyfriend's roommate is weirded out by the mice in the freezer if they mix with the food. Our compromise was that all frozen mice are in one shelf on the door of the freezer so he doesn't have to sort through them while looking for dinner.

Last year 2 of my 3 roommates got dogs without asking the rest of us, so one day I just showed up with a corn snake. The one uppity girl was terrified of him and always complained...I just told her I was equally scared of her spastic italian greyhound and the fact that it was litter box trained. They got over it pretty fast...
