Help! I'm Scared! She's having short spazms!

She just shedded out of her skin a few hours ago but now she's resting but every now and then, she has very short spazms.

Please help! I don't know why she's doing this...

I don't know what to tell you. Are you sure she's not still working out of her skin? Has anything changed before she shed?

It's definitely odd. How does she feel when you pick her up? Is she limp or does she have good muscle tone?

still good muscle tone. I know she's not near death I don't think but I'm trying to prevent it if it were to happen in the long run.

Is there any noise when she does it? I know my girl had a minor RI and when she sneezed she twitched?

I just clicked that link, it's made from fir bark? I'm pretty sure it's not recommended to use that with corns?

Is she still doing it this morning??

My Zee does a thing like that when I touch him. I wonder if her new skin is sensitive??

She seems fine now...

I just fed her this morning and I might reconsider about the substrate and get a different kind. She's ok with it actually even though it's slightly dusty after everytime I clean the tank. But I let all the dust settle before putting her back in and I clean the sides.

Idk but I think it could just be during the shedding period because she had short spazms during her blue period and after it. So far, she hasn't had spazms

Fir is toxic to corns. Theses spasms MAY be signs of poisoning. Get rid of your substrate immediately and replace with aspen, newspaper, or paper towels. I would have her checked by a vet.

I've never heard that fir is toxic. Cedar is toxic, and pine is suspected to be a respiratory irritant, but I've never heard anything bad about fir. Could you site your sources?

I always do my research. Page 42, Corn Snakes,The Comprehensive Owner's Guide by Kathy Love, for one, which states, in part, "Avoid using resinous wood mulches such as cedar, pine, fir (emphasis added), and walnut which have toxic aromas or oils especially dangerous to juveniles..." :santa:

I second that. Many websites indicate Fir is not to be used.

Thank you for telling me that. Just when I saw that fir tree substrate is toxic I dumped her tank out and drove to the pet store to get aspen substrate.

So far, there has been less spazms and less "caressing" of herself with her nose to her body but I'm still going to keep an eye out if she's ok.

Actually, Amber stays in her tree 70% of the time that I've had her. I've only had her for 3 months. I guess she's pretty smart to stay away from the fir substrate but does it still affect her even though she's been hanging above it?

Unless the toxins from the fir substrate release particles into the air, I can say it wouldn't have affected her.
Buuuut, 30% of the time she must of layed on the substrate.
So I would get her checked out. :)

I'm happy to hear she's doing better. Corns are remarkably resilient. Most of us are just nervous nellies when it comes to the care of our pets. As you may have gathered, lots of people have used the fir without problems, but I rather err on the side of caution. Keep us posted on her progress.
