Hey Arson - is today the day?

Sandra

I'm waiting for the UPS man, and I think I read that you are expecting your snake today, too. WOO HOO! Post up when you get her, and I'll do the same.

Yes, today is the day! I just brought her home, WOOHOO! She's so tiny! She's 20 inches, but her body is so small. I was wondering when I got my pinkies in the mail how in the world they would satisfy her, but now I see! I'll do my best to get a pic up as soon as I can. Right now she's licking everything. =P

I just got off the phone with Kathy Love to let her know everything went well. I'm sure she's (the snake) glad that she's in a nice quiet place. She's huddled inside her coconut shell hide now. It's hard to resist the urge to touch her or peek, but I'm just going to leave her alone for the standard 3 days. I'm so excited!

Let me know when you get yours, Sandra!

She's been here for about 30 minutes now. WOW! She's GORGEOUS!! She peeked out of her shipping container and once she figured out I was cool (I didn't move a muscle) she started cruising around the viv. She's already climbed the tree and tried to find a way out!

My girl is way smaller than I expected, too. So cute!! I'm not sure on the length - I'll have to ask Gardenmum. Boy she is even prettier up close! Leaving them alone is going to be TORTURE. :D

this photo doesn't do her beauty any justice (no flash, Photoshop enhanced brightness), but isn't she cute??

I hate to say it Sandra, but I think I'm going to have to steal your name from your snake--Mika! It's so weird...I remember reading your thread before, but completely forgot what that you decided on a name.

I was driving home and thought, "Ok, it has to have something to do with her size....small....tiny...micro....Micra?...no...MIKA!"

Looks like we'll both have a Mika that we both got on the same day.

:D

Ack, she pooped already!

Arson, that's fine with me! We like the name, so the more the merrier!! We'll have to compare notes as we raise our little beauties.

My Mika is hanging out in her tree right now - I can't believe how excited I am!

Do you know when yours was hatched? Kathy told me this one was hatched on June 10, 2003 so she's just under 1 year. Man, they must be so tiny when they're born.

dang, I never thought to ask her birthday, either! I just sent another email to Gardenmum. We're going to have to have a party for her every year, of course! :D

Sandra, here's an update for ya!

I've been dutifully resisting the urge to bug her too much or look at her. I haven't touched her at all and I barely peek inside. I bought a rheostat for my heating pad since the temps on the bottom of the tank were rounding out at about 112F. I adjusted it to about 101F on the glass (which is covered by a paper towel to minimize burns) which makes it about 83-86 on the surface.

The first day I put her in she snooped around the place and settled inside a hide that is a half of a coconut shell. Since then I have seen her search the entire rim of the upper part of the tank, but not finding anywhere to sneak out. Now she spends most of her time borrowing under the aspen shavings. It's kind of funny actually...if I look underneath the glass I can see where she's created all sorts of little tunnels--it reminds me of an ant bed.

Today marks the 3rd that day I've had her, so tomorrow will be my first day handling her! I'll also make tomorrow her first day feeding. Should be fun!

David

P.S. I've borrowed a digital camera from a coworker of mine and will be posting some pictures very soon. Let's see some more of yours!

Hey Arson,

Your girl sounds just like mine! She spends all day in one of her hides, and cruises the viv from about 7 pm on during the night. She likes to hang out on the thermometer and in her tree as well as tunnel through the aspen shavings. She's very active!

I'm going to be handling her tonight on the recomendation of Gardenmum. I'm going to take her out of her viv soon and then feed her a fuzzy head. I'll try to get pics! Then, after 48 hours of no handling, I'm going to start some brief sessions and feed her the rest of her fuzzy in 4 days. I'm really excited!

Thanks for the update - I'll let you know how it goes tonight.

If you e-mail Kathy with the information from the card that was on the deli cup she should be able to tell you when it was born. If you keep that information and in the future you are looking for a mate for a certain snake bought from her you could give her the information and then she'll be able to see if she has a mate that is unrelated to the one you have.

DAND, Sandra did not get her snake from Kathy, that was me. She got hers from Gardenmum.

Kathy explained to me the magic of "the card." I have kept both the Post-It note she included in the picture and the label on the deli cup.

Quigs, I've only had her for 3 days and feeding her a head today was Gardenmum's suggestion. She downed it like a champ!

Here she is - boy, getting quality photos of these wiggly snakes is tough! None of the photos I took of her on my hand or arm turned out. What a thrill this was, though. She was very curious and never tried to bite me. WOW!

Here she is after I removed her hide:

Here she is in the feed box (dark, but oh well):

And here she is chowing on dinner (dark, too):

Sandra

Glad to see she is doing so great for you!:)

Quigs, I suggested she give the head because I normally feed a smaller item than the snake is accustomed to eating for the first meal after shipment just to be on the safe side and not cause a stress regurge. Then I go to their regular sized food item if they seem fine with it all. Since Sandra had no pinks to offer and the motley eats fuzzies, I suggested she give just the head then, obviously to follow with the body so as not to waste it, then go to regular fuzzy feedings.
Granted that most times the snake can take their regular feeding without a problem but I prefer to ere on the safe side as stress regurges are not a fun thing to deal with. ;)

Ah, I gotcha. Sorry I didn't mean to come off as critical, I was just simply curious.

Generally when I get new arrivals I don't feed them for a week. Depending on when they arrive. Shows are always on the weekend so I leave them alone til the next feeding day. Usually Saturday but sometimes things arise and I don't get a chance til sunday. If the specimen is shipped, generally they arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday and therefore skip them on the first weekend feeding so they tend to go about 10 days without any disturbances.

So it all depends. We all do things relatively the same but slightly differently. I do agree with ya, Gardenmum, the first feeding on a new arrival here is offered a small meal first. Fortunately, I do usually have pinks around.

I just picked up a normal stripe little girl last weekend (although, I tend to think she might be a hypo striper). Mice are thawing as we speak, so hopefully she'll eat as well for me as the seller says she ate for him! We'll see in a few minutes.

Again...sorry if I seemed critical of your suggestion. It was certainly not meant that way! I'm just curious as to others practices still.

Regards,

Quigs

PS. Congrats Sandra, she's beautiful and I'm sure glad she ate for ya right away!

Quigs

No worry. I didn't take it as critical but as curious so I thought I would explain why. So, no reason at all for you to apologize. I took as you said it.

Hope yours has eaten well for you.;)

I borrowed a digital camera from a friend. Here are some no-so-perfect pictures, but it gives you the idea.

Alright Gardenmum...just wanted to be clear. When I reread what I posted, I think I came off although short but may have been percieved by some as snippy. There's been some troll lurking around here lately and wanted to clarify that I certainly am not one of them! lol

Feeding day is always a pleasure around here for us. We hand feed everyone and enjoying every bit of it while our collection is still small enough. Takes a couple hours but like I said we enjoy the hell out of it. A few of our 03's are a little shy with their eating habits and won't eat until the lights are off and we leave the room. Most are vicious eaters, some will even gladly eat whiling be held even.

The new little striped female ate like a champ for me tonight. I was a little concerned about her. The guy I bought her from, when asked what he was feeding her, he said well usually f/t but whatever I have availible she'll eat. That kind of made me assume he was feeding live. lol Call me paranoid but that was the impression I got. I do have some 6 day old live pinks here, so I wasn't all that worried about it. However, she downed the f/t one with no hestitation and acted like she was looking for another. I was pleased to say the least. But she'll have to wait for next week to see if she gets two...lol

I'm babbling, so I'll goto bed now.

Thanks for understanding.

Quigs

Oops...I almost forgot

Arson...

Real nice looking snow you got there. I like how you can see her brain! :roflmao:
