So, my name is Shannon...I'm a freshman student at Michigan State. I have a 0.1 corn snake and a 1.0 leopard gecko. The corn snake's name is Corn, while the gecko's name is Dexter. I've actually been lurking on here for about 4 years before I registered...in fact I even named my gecko after another user's gecko...haha.

So... I had a rough summer before I left for school. My father passed away of lung cancer only weeks before fall semester. So, I wasn't thinking clearly when I decided what would happen to my reptiles when I left. My gecko lives with my mom right now, but because she is afraid of my snake, Corn lives with my aunt and uncle about 5 miles away from where I'm at.

My aunt and uncle know a lot about reptiles, they have two very healthy and happy beardies. But when I was over visiting, I noticed some ladybugs had gotten into Corn's enclosure to hibernate. I didn't say anything, but it's been bothering me ever since. Is it really worth mentioning? They are providing me a great service by housing her for me until I get an apartment in a couple years, I don't want to be rude. Plus my uncle has been really awesome in terms of support, he has kind of taken me in as his daughter, I don't want to make him feel bad. But I also care about my snake. What should I do? She seems healthy and happy, but I'm not very experienced, so I thought I'd ask you guys..

I don't think ladybugs will hurt her but if they are hybernating in there that sounds like the enclosure is not being cleaned out. I would mention it in an off-hand kind of way, like "Oh I thought you should know there were ladybugs in the reptile room and I saw some in Corn's enclosure. Thought you should know." Or something.

Hey there Shannon, welcome to the site :D glad you decided to speak up finally lol I'm a college student as well, I attend Western Or. Univ. I currently have 5 juvi corns and am getting a sub adult next weekend. Feel free to check out their pics on my profile. And when you get a chance post some pics of your corn, we love pictures here :D

Welcome to the forum (officially)! I'm sorry to hear about your father's death. I lost my dad the same way and I know it's hard.

I live in MS now, but most of life I lived in Indiana. We had a big picture window which somehow would get covered in ladybugs about this time of year. It didn't seem to matter what we did, it happened year after year. They aren't harmful, they won't hurt Corn, and it's not necessarily an issue of infrequent cleaning. They may not even be coming from the viv; they may be getting into the viv from somewhere else.

It's easy to check whether or not the viv's getting cleaned by checking the substrate for waste. Well-kept snake vivs are essentially odorless (unless the snake has just expelled waste, of course).

You're obviously a caring keeper who wants the best for your animals. I wouldn't worry about the ladybugs.
