er, you might want to separate them before the female breeds too young, it can be really hard on them. Sometimes it can even kill them.

You can get cheap rubbermaid bins and drill holes in for air. I have a python housed in one, they're great! And cheap, like 15$ at most so maybe you could ask for one for your birthday. Just put a luggage strap around it (you can get those at the dollar store) so they can't get out.

Welcome to the forum..Just please seperate them before harm comes to one of them and it's to late.. :0(

my mom says if they are gunna breed they wouldve done it already and i said no but she wont listen, she thinks cause theyve been together for a year they wouldve done it

And your mom has been keeping snakes for how long now? Sorry to sound harsh, but there is not a single good reason to force 2 snakes to live together. Snakes are solitary animals and keeping them together is not in their best interest. I had to temporarily house a pair together because of a rack burning up. Long story short, housing them together indirectly led to the death of one of my favorite snakes.

Hi All....
This is Bridgette aka "Mom"
To answer the question above..... I have only 2 years experience with snakes.
We have had the female corn snake for 2 years now and the male 1 year. I purchased them from a very prominent pet store in our area and was never told not to house them together. In fact, I was told that because they were both corn snakes they would be ok together, other than feeding time at which point they are separated. I understand that sexual maturity is between 1 1/2 yr. to 2 yrs, and she is a little over two years. We will post pic's. Thanks for all of your feedback and Happy Birthday Markel!

Hi Bridgette,

Pet shops do tend to house corns together, but their intent is to display as many animals as possible in a small space to market them effectively. The info they give is not always the best. Sexual maturity in corns is more like 2-3 years old, but the female should weigh a minimum of 300 grams in order to lay eggs safely. If she is too small, breeding can take a huge toll on her health and possibly kill her. Snakes are solitary animals in nature, only coming together to breed, so if a male and female are housed together the female can be terribly stressed from being constantly pursused by the male. Stress can also cause health problems, as snakes are solitary animals and really don't like each other. They see others as competition for resources. Plus if one of your snakes has a regurge, or a problem, there is no way to know which one it was.
Just think of it this way...how would you like to be forced to live in close quarters with someone if you are solitary by nature?

Er, so you're going to go with the pet stores advice - who's main motivation I might add, is selling their product - rather than people who have years experience with this specific breed? Rather than like almost every book on corn snakes (at least, I have yet to read one published in the last two decades that says you can keep two together. How many have you read?)

Besides, even the people who do say co-habbing is fine (and there are still to many risks to the animals for me to ever agree with them) would NEVER say it's a good idea to house young corns with such a size difference.

It is not a good idea. It's no skin off my back if one of your snakes die, but I really can't stand to see people willfully ignore the wellbeing of animals that depend on them for everything. Pets aren't decorations, toys, or disposable!

Oh well, I have hope for your son at least, since he took the time to come here and find more information on his own. My mom was also very bad with animals and didn't really care about their safety, but I grew up to be a much better pet owner.

Rupert...
Thanks so much for the friendly advice. You have brought up some valid points that I will def. consider. I appreciate your help and we will def. consider separating them now.

V_Various....
Out of respect for my son I won't even acknowledge your response.
I hope your day gets better.

LOL Bridgette! My real name is Beth, The "Rupert" thing is an ongoing joke between me and another member on here.

Just think of it this way...petshops are all about making money. Sure, some are better than others, and some are good with animals, but they are a business.

The people here are hobbyists. They are passionate about a single species. They study that species and obsess upon it. When we give advice, it is because we have the welfare of corns at the forefront, We have alot of experiance with the species, and honestly, know more than most pet shops do when it comes to caring for these guys. The breeders here do it out of love for the species. I am a breeder myself. Someday I would LOVE it if the money I make selling babies supported my hobby for one year, But I don't do it for the money. The welfare of my favorite species is what matters to me. Please read the story in my forum about the death of my girl Kelsey, who died because I cohabbed. The snake in my avatar is her son Kato, who survived. And please please seperate yours! :)

Should I buy another 20g tank or get 2 sterilites, for my corn snakes, my mom is stubborn and kinda has a attitude some times :smash::smash: ill seperate them but dont want them to be bored

I personally prefer sterilites when it comes down to cleaning but my UTHs dont stick to them very well and I have to ducttape them.

I like the sterlites because they are so lightweight and easy to clean. All my snakes do really well in them, just use a soldering iron to burn vent holes in the sides and you're good to go!

Or using a drill you can drill in a couple 1/8th holes everywhere, depending wether or not you had access or experience with a soldering iron right now. I only had a drill on hand to create vent holes and I ruined a whole sterilite because my bit wasn't turning fast enough and the plastic kept cracking.

Then I used a soldering iron a week later and found it much easier and faster to do - just make sure you do it in an open area so you don't breathe in too many melted plastic fumes and make sure to clean up the residues as you go before they become solid again.

Hi Bridgette and son and welcome to the forum. I think it's great that you and son are in together on this venture. Agree with all the advice above on seperating.
Caught a part of what your son said about the female getting plump??? You may want to watch her as while the book says one thing about sexual maturity, most snakes haven't read the book. Some of the big breeders have used very young males for breeding with much success.
Also a note to son there are a lot of kids on this forum that is why we keep it kid friendly, but you will get more help if you cut the computer speak and use sentences. Some of the under 18 crowd on here are very knowledgable and have gained lots of respect, but if us old ones can't understand you???? susang

I use the 40qt with a locking lid.
You know, the basics..aspen, hide, water bowl, heat source, thermometer,,,just set it up like the 20 gallon is and you should be fine.

They won't be bored believe me they aren't playing together now and if they are it is for one of two reasons agression or breeding.
