Hi

I bought my first snake about a month ago and everything has been fine, until her first shed . The skin has came off in bits, but its all gone now and the snake looks healthy enough. The only problem is she has gone off her food altogether, but previously she would eat instantly.

I thought that the starter viv may have been to small as she had grown to roughly 18 inches in length. So under advice of the reptile store i have bought a 18 inch x 18 x 18 viv. Now on her last feed before her shed she took her first fuzzie, and she struggled with it but eventualy ate it. That was 10 days ago, she has turned her nose up to everything since. Even though i have tried reverting back to pinkies . I have even tried braining them, hand feeding her and putting her in a tub with just a pinkie but no success.

I know im probably worrying over nothing but i am a first timer, so if any one has any advice id be gratefull.

Thank you

Give her a day or two-she might be cranky from the shed and all the extra attention. Then try again with a small fuzzy. If she doesn't take it, put some chicken broth on it. Good luck to you and your new little one!.

My nagini is doing the same thing, though she had a roughly large meal before the shed, and has now been ignoring food for 12 days. Im waiting until the schedual comes back around, and will probably just try the chicken broth to see if it helps if she ignores it again. When i was little mom says some of the snakes we had did it back then too, and that it wasnt Just the shed, it was the meal lasting longer on top of it.. They just didnt want to eat.

Thanks for the advice, ill leave her for a couple of days then as i said she is in a new bigger viv as well.

Hopefully all will be ok, ill get my girl freind to take a pic of her and ill post it up

Awesome, i cant wait. Once my house clears of some people and mine arent so skiddish i plan to have my friend, whos an AWESOME photographer, take pictures of my babies too.

I bet yours is Beautiful. =]]]

Well there she is, as i said she only shed last week but it didn't go to well

When ever your snake has a partial shed like that you should carefully check that the old skin has completely come off from the eyes and the tip of the tail. Skin thats left on, especially on the tail, can cause some problems. If the skin hasn't come off, take a damp wash cloth and gentley rub the skin of the tip of their tail. The skin over the eyes can be taken off with tweezers I've heard. but I have never done that and dont know if there is a better way.

Looks like she's doing well though.

Thanks

Yeah the eyes are clear and the tail skin actualy came off while she was slithering through my fingers. The only section that came off in one complete bit, there is a tiny bit still on her side though.

Ill try a damp wash cloth see if that will get rid of it

My snake shed in bits too because she was attempting to escape through a very small hole while my 7 yr old son was suppossed to be holding her. We had to pull her out of the hole. That was the day before she shed so when she did it shredded her shed. She still has a small piece of shed on the side of her neck (about 1/2"). I have tried everything to get it off. I just pray that it doesnt cause any problems until the next time she sheds.
Good Luck with yours!

She still not intrested in eating but its only been 11 days, my 5 month old baby is easier to look after lol.

Also as i said i am tottaly new to snakes anyone have an idea to how old she could be, she is 18 to 19 inches long if that helps.

I don't think it would be a good idea to ever go near a corn with tweezers, especially one's eye. What I believe to have read before that could help with eye caps not coming off after a shed is to use a small drop of mineral oil.

Pretty snake you have there!

Yeah she is cool

Try telling my g/f that though she isn't to keen lol i don't know why she seems to like human contact and has never struck or anything at me, although she has had the odd tail rattling moment lol.

Tell your girlfriend that we just had 9 babies hatch, many of which are more like Hatelings, that strike at my 10 year old daughter and she's not too worried about it. My boyfriend is a little odd about the snakes too. He listens to me talk about them all day long, but only actually holds one if I place them in his hand. When I do that, he usully ends up being mesmorized and holding on to them for a good twenty minutes! Maybe your girlfriend just needs time.

She did actualy touch it with one finger last week lol, which was a break through because when i first brought it into the house she was ready to bolt out the door.

lol

Still she has had a snake phobua all her life so we are making great steps

You should pick up a book or two and read up. They will have a ton of helpful information. I recommend Kathy Love's Cornsnakes: The comprehensive Owner's guide. There are a other good ones out there as well. Along with that the FAQ might help a bit.

As for the age of your snake, it is probably a year old, hatched in 2007.

I totally agree, but I swear I've read that...

Snake is still refusing to eat :(

Ive tried braining them and everything

Im now trying 1 fuzzie rolled in hamster bedding (read it in a book) and ive put her in a tub with it and im going to leave her overnight and hope its gone in the morning.

Really frustrating as just seen my mates snake take two in secounds, its really strange as she used to feed as soon as i put food into her viv.
I know im beuing anxious but getting on for two weeks now :(
