Hi! Newbie considering a snake

I went to pick up a screen lid at Petsmart and the clips but the lady said it won't work and the snake can escape. She told me to get a large plastic critter tote until I can order a better screen.

So now I am confused.

I have both types of covers....a screen that I bought separately to fit an inexpensive 10 gallon aquarium and an actual terrarium with a built in screen. Have you considered buying one with a built in screen or a front opening one?

I'm going to save up to buy one. I have her (he thinks it's a female) now and she's fine in the one I bought. She's smaller than I thought!! I will start saving to get her a nice locking terrarium.

Meet my new girl! Now to think of a name...

Cornsnakes are amazing! I have 3, ranging from 1 foot to 5. All have amazing temperaments and great to handle. I use aspen shavings and when they go through sheds I make a hid box with coco husk which is 5 dollars at your local pet store and lasts 6 or more months! It keeps the humidity perfect so their sheds come out all in one and easily. I than remove it and go back to aspen till they need it again.

Welcome to your new addiction <3 You got a very pretty snake there... and with these guys helping you you can't go wrong..

As for tank size, search garage sales and thrift stores for aquariums, the bigger the better (20L minimum) and you can order a good metal mesh screen from Amazon. The larger size isn't a problem, wild corns are born into a whole world in which to explore, not just a couple of square feet, but they do like their hides a lot, and if you "clutter" the bottom with plastic and silk vines and aquarium plants they will be happy and you won't have to shell out more money when the time comes.

I think owning a corn sounds fun and pretty easy! I got a book from the library yesterday about corn and rat snakes and I'm so excited to get started!

Very much yes! Snakes, of all kinds, are fantastic escape artists! Probably the biggest requirements for a good enclosure for them is it being very secure, good temps, enough hides and good ventilation.
