Never Enough!
Would you buy from a kid?
Well I am just like the rest of you folks just younger.
I am fourteen years old and I would like to see people opinions on if they would buy snakes from someone younger than they are.
Answer honestly because I would really like to know what your options are.

Age wouldn`t change my mind, just like every other snake seller it would matter about the`re feedback In my opinion.

I might if it was at a reptile expo and there was parental involvement, and they had a professional booth. Otherwise, no, never.

I bought my first snake from a girl that had to be around 12 years old. She knew more about genetics and snake husbandry than most people at the show. And she had complete records on each snake.

My answer is yes.

Probably not.

:-offtopic And on another note, I thought that only corns with red eyes are allowed to be owned in New Jersey. I sure hope you won't get into trouble with those ghosts and anerys...

If the breeder knew what they were doing and obviously took great care of their animals, I'd buy from them regardless of age. I've met plenty of kids and teenagers who knew more about their animals than many adults. I appreciate that kind of passion.

Well, yes. Why not?

I honestly don't see where age comes in to it. A healthy corn is a healthy corn and if I deem the snake to be healthy and a nice specimen, where is the difference in buying from anyone else?

my first snake, mousetrap was bought from a girl who was a few years younger than I am, but she knew her stuff, and her hatchlings were well taken care of. I dont think age should really matter if they know their stuff.

age woundnt bother me if the owner knew the facts and carried healthy specimans then there is no need for me to discriminate against age.im only 18 n ive been keepin snakes for the last 7 years n breedin for 3 so age isnt a deterent for me

First, I'd want to have a really close look at all the Corns on sale and a good talk with the teenager in question.

But if the Corns were healthy and the teenager knew their stuff - then yes, I'd certainly buy.

Honestly I would want to have some sort of adult involvment. Whether the money or the actual contractual agreement was passing between me and another adult would be the big thing.
I'm sorry but I'd just feel better in my mind knowing.

Oh and in the state of nj we are allowed to have :

http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/xotic_petshop_app.pdf
Amels,Lavs, Butters, Blizzards, Snow, Creamsicle,Pearl

Although I don't understand why supposedly we just can't have all the morphs that don't look like normals. So I mean I can understand, normals, okeetees, miami's and what not....

Buying from a teen

For me i judge all breeders and animals before any purchase.

So if the animal was healthy and the teen knew the right stuff then yes i would, but i would deffinately not do it without first seeing the animal and talking to the seller, just like any purchase.

Morons come in all ages, but not all ages come as morons.

I would have to buy from someone who is legally accountable (18 years in the US.) There is nothing wrong with teens keeping snakes (I have kept snakes since I was 13) but there is nothing wrong with waiting until 18 to breed, knowledgeable or not. If something goes wrong with the sale, you have nothing but their word that they will take care of it and with all of the things that DO go wrong, that's just not enough for me. This is not about the abilities of a teen to care for breeding animals. I have raised mice since I was 16, but I only charged $1-2 each at that time so if something DID go wrong then the buyer only lost a bit of pocket change as a worse case scenario. Since snakes cost a bit more, it's like giving someone money with no guarantee, and anything more than a few dollars is too much to just hand over without some kind of legal accountability.

To laugh about it I bought those corn snakes in New Jersey (all of them) :crazy02:

I might buy from a minor in person.

Then I could examine the animal and make sure I was satisfied with it. I would never buy sight unseen from a minor, since they can't legally enter into a binding contract, as was already mentioned. Even more importantly, I would never knowingly SELL to a minor without involving a parent, for the same reason.

Some kids may have a lot of knowledge and passion for animals, but they generally lack the experience to understand how the business world works, and especially how customer service problems are best handled. That is often true of many younger people in their late teens and early twenties, and unfortunately, often true of older people of all ages, especially if they haven't owned a business in the past. But those 18 and above can be held accountable regardless of their lack of experience, so I would want to complete any deals involving much risk (distance sales or those involving larger sums of money) with a legal adult.

With that being said, I had business cards made up and was calling myself Junglehut Pet Shop out of my dad's home when I was around 16 years old. I had no money, limited experience, but lots of enthusiasm! Whenever I saved up some babysitting money, I would buy some snakes from Florida (I lived in Wisconsin) - my bedroom was full of them! I didn't really make any money, but sure learned a lot during that growing up time. Don't worry if you can't be a full business just yet - learn as much as possible during the next few years - 18 will come sooner than you think!

One thing that you have to keep in mind: As a minor, you are unable to enter into a legally binding contract (depending on your age and the state - 16+ can in some states). So let's say I sent a younger breeder a check for $1000 for a big order of snakes. If something happened to my order, and the younger breeder was completely uncooperative, I would be unable to get my money back by any legal means.

Now, I know that you're not going to do anything like that, but it is something that can make people wary of doing business with a teenager. My recommendation is that you get your mom or dad to serve as a "backer" in your business. Basically, that means that although you're still the boss ;), Mom/Dad is officially involved in the business by being the one to actually contract with buyers. This way, you cover your butt.

I voted "no", but there are circumstances where I would consider it. Most of those circumstances have already been covered, including the actual seller being the parent, not the child.

Of course, if any kid out there wants to sell me a pair of lava-sunkissed-lavender-bloods for $100, I'm open to the idea... ;)
