Housing snakes together - my very, very long opinion

You brought the albino jungle off of SoPirate55??

That snake looked awesome!

Yep, he met me today, we live ?relatively? close. She is a beauty, and very sweet. My son actually bought her for me. I was in line to get my most treasured coral snow from Don at SMR, when lo and behold the septic tank and drainfield took a well...you know. LOL There went the snake money! But I got a good deal from Pirate and my son said to go get her. Kids can be okay sometimes ya know? :O) Note to self: HAVE to wait a week at least to let her settle in before handling!!!

LOL Howie! It's going to be murder for me to not share pics of my bp, but dammit I WILL have the restraint!

And no, I'm not housing them together (gotta stay on topic lol).

You're set on that BP now huh? LOL Next year..........wonder how much shipping would be to CA? Anybody know? Overnight? Couldn't be more than they're charging for the BPs up there! LOL

Hey, that's awesome of you to come back and apologise. We are who we chose to be, eh? Ya don't wanna be an ass? Then don't be an ass. hehe ;)

Hooray for found pets!

hey everyone...im new here jus sayin hey. packerfan seemed like a pretty decent guy...he even apalogized. y'd he get blocked?

He got blocked because I put my foot down with some of his comments. I found that this new message board version has an interesting feature I didn't know about. Time-selective banning. In other words, I can ban someone for a selected period of time for their disruptive outbursts on my site. Packerfan4 has been banned for 7 days.

I am tempted to do that to more people who have dragged this thread so off topic that it would take me two forevers to cut out all of the extraneous crap in it.

A word to the wise: DON'T post any little thought that pops into your head within any thread you just happen to be in. If it is more appropriate in email or PM, then USE it, not post it. If it is NOT directly about corn snakes, there is a general Chit-Chat forum that you are welcome to utilize.

Now about that lawsuit threat...... Give me a break! Since when are the laws of the UK able to be levied against a USA citizen on their own soil, either in a UK court or in a USA court? Or how could a UK citizen file a lawsuit within the USA when they do not have standing in a USA court? A UK citizen is not protected by USA law unless they are within the physical boundaries of the USA. And I USA citizen is not held accountable for UK law if they are not on UK soil. Ever hear of "jurisdiction"? Do you even know how much it would cost you to even file a lawsuit? I hope you are independently wealthy, otherwise forget it. Oh yeah, don't forget that you need to show proveable damages as well. Juries like to see things like that in tort cases, you know?

And if a barrister were actually consulted and they told you this is a case of slander, you had better fire this person and get someone who knows what the heck they are talking about. False statements posted in print are "libel", not "slander". Sheesh! Please don't pretend to be throwing legal jargon around here. It just won't fly if you don't have a clue about what you are talking about.

So, cornman1979, I hope that is a suitable answer to your complaint to me.

my situation

I have always kept my 3 corns together since they were 2 1/2 months old. They were in a ten gal tank with as many as 30 of their brothers and sisters. A teenage boy had 2 snakes that mated and put an ad in a local paper. I kept in contact with the family until they sold their snakes last year and they never had any problems with them. My snakes are now over 3 yrs old. When they were younger I just watched signs for when they were hungry. which tended to be every 4 days or so on a half pinky (that as gross when I had to cut them.)

Simone

I'm sorry, but keeping 30 snakes in one small tank is overcrowding. Corns or not. Keeping 3 in a 10 gl. is also overcrowding. As far as I'm concerned, you've been lucky you've never had any problems and that your snakes are still healthy. How are you feeding them now? In the same tank together, on substrate? Snakes always act hungry, but it doesn't mean you should feed them that often. If I fed my Green Tree Python everytime she "looked hungry" I'd be feeding her daily. Obesity can become a problem at adulthood, and I'm hoping the 3 you have together aren't 3 males, or a couple of females and a male. You're going to end up with indescriminant breeding. Frankly it concerns me that you think that a family who kept so many animals together that they bred, know anything about husbandry of these snakes. There are far more knowledgable breeders on this forum to look up to then that. Those people probably don't neuter their dogs or cats either and have mixed puppies and kittens running around too. Doesn't make them knowlegable, and frankly it turns my stomach! I usually subscribe to do what you want as long as it doesn't cause the animal grief, but this becomes abuse due to ignorance.

my bad. That's when they were young. they have been in a 40 gal breeder since just before they turned 6 months old.

Clearly you missed that they were young. also I have always fed them seperately in different tanks. They are up to 2 small adult mice every 2 weeks or so. It was also their first babies. Snakes were new to me. My vet told me that it is fine to have them together as long as there doesn't seem to be any problem. And there isn't. I've been taking them to a vet since I bought them 3 years ago.

Simone

Much better. I personally don't care if you house together or not, I had issues with 30 snakes of any kind in a cage together, or 3 larger snakes in such a small enclosure. I personally don't house together purely for keeping health problems to one snake if they get sick, but it works for some.

My opinion,

You take 2 animals that are solitary by nature and FORCE them to live together, you are exposing them to stress that they can NEVER escape from.
They may "look" fine, but they can't tell you whether or not your actions have made their lives a living hell.

Snakes don't travel in herds in the wild. They come together only to mate. They are not social. In my opinion forcing them to live together is akin to animal cruelty.
