How do you pronounce "colubrid"?

smigon

Old enough to know better
I have always thought of it as COLL-yoo-brid, but many discussions on the web have it as kohl-OOH-brid or coll-YOO-brid.

I know that all of us being from all corners of the world will have differing opinions, what is your pronunciation?

Colubrids get their name from their taxonomic family, Colubridae. The way I pronounce it: Kohl-OO-brihds. I haven't been corrected yet, even when I've asked questions using this pronunciation at a couple of shows thus far (like the first time I met a pine snake...lovely creature!).

I think the variations all convey the same message, and I'd be willing to make at least a mild wager that globally, at least two accepted pronunciations exist. To-may-toe, to-mah-toe. (What is it with the second syllable? LOL.) ;)

The word for snake in spanish, Culebra, is pronounced with emphasis on the second syllable so I've always said Co-LOOH-brid but I've heard a lot of people say CALL-ooh-brid too.

I think that's the same way I say it..

It's so nice to hear the use of scientific names now instead of common names. Cuts down the confusion.

I use two pronunciations and I never quite know which one is going to be used until I'm saying it. XD My brain hasn't 'picked one' yet.

CAHL-uh-brid
ca-LOO-brid.

I was all excited to learn something new in this thread, but now all I see is that everyone is confused. Do we have something definitive? I choose to never say the word cause I'm not sure how...

I don't know that I'd label it confusion, necessarily. I see it as more of an agreement to more than one pronunciation in a multicultural world/hobby. Additionally, I wonder how many of us are more accustomed to reading and seeing the written term, as opposed to actually hearing it from an authority in an educational lecture. I would suspect that's true for many.
