How many...

Of you are breeders.. an how many are not and how many snakes you all have.

I am just after seeing a post of someone with 40+ anmals
And sopme other poeple with huge counts

Now I can imagine snakes are addictive, I would not mind anothereither

But some of these counts strike me as bizar...no offence ment
I realy do not think that most of us are that spaciously housed etc.

A breeder with 10+ animals (not counted any clutches) fair enough

It just astounishes me ....

So how many does each of you have?

I currently have 17 corn snakes in my house, and I hobby breed. Most of my corns are juveniles.

39 snakes, including 2 boa's, 3 kings and 2 gophers, rest are corn snakes. I breed as a hobby, about 5-6 clutches each year (50-80 baby's)

I have a business, but it's purely for hobby. I have reduced my permanent collection of corns and other snakes at my huband's request. Right now my permanent collection is at 73, and I have a few more for sale. I do plan to keep a few more that I produce this season, provided I get some of my target morphs.

I have so where in the ball park of 50 adult African Fat-Tail Geckos I breed for a hobby. I have around 50 hatchlings this season because I only really breed a few pairs. New season I will up it a bit.

So most of you seem to breed
But Blut vthe 39 are your 39 individual pets
The same goes for your 26 ones...
as i take your clutches will be taken

Hell that is a lot of snake to care for
Am i prying now if I ask how big are you housed.
I mean if I take 20x a viv for a medium/full bodied snake..they dont stay juvenile forever). you need a room for that alone

20x 10 minutes handling a day is excess three hours (ok 15 hours a week when you take not handling after a feed into account)

My curiosity was sparked by another thread. I take animal welfare logically and seriously. Animals are animals....
-you dont amputate mammals..you cure them with a bit of lead behind the ear)
-You dont take for instance a dogif you cant excersize him minimum 3x a day and have adequate care for your hoilidays.
-calfs look good...they taste good as well... (I'll have mine blue with garlic butter)

So no i am not a veggy peta member on all accounts

And neither am i biting in to you for having 17 smnakes.... I just wonder how do you time manage.

Animals are stupid... and limmited in their survival chances once we humans start "taking care" of them.... So its our RESPONCIBILITY to take care of those . The ISPCA here is now advertising that a dog is for the whole year not just for christmas. That add surely would not work with poultry.... but still goes for reptiles

We do not breed. Started out with plans to breed and acquired some nice morphs in support of that, though some of them had nasty temperaments and were terrible pets. Eventually decided breeding at that time was not for us (first and foremost due to our state laws) and sold many of the nasty tempered animals with the good genes!!

Now we have about 5 or 6 more snakes than we did then, but they are all morphs we really like, and the vast majority of them are very nice snakes! I'd say we have somewhere in the mid-40's, though I don't keep an exact count in my mind.

Snakes are easy though. 40 snakes is a thousand times easier than three dogs and a cat.

Damn I didn't know you had that many. There's only like six on your iHerp page! ;)

Well, snakes don't need handling, they might even be better off when never handled :) I handle with feeding and when I feel like it I handle the ones that are out and about at that moment.

I check for poo every evening, takes me about 15 min at the most, if I don't smell anything and have not smelt anything in the morning (they are in my living room so I absolutely smell it when I'm preparing to go to work in the morning) I might even skip the 'poo check'. I do always visually check the vivs in the morning and evening for oddity's.

I change water every 5-7 days (I keep an Excelsheet to monitor it, different 'piles' of vivs are done on different day's to spread the work load).

These are my vivs:

I have added a few in the second room meanwhile, have to update my site. They don't take that much room, considering how many I have. But we evil Dutch people co-hab :poke:

Feeding takes me about 3-4 hours spread over 9-10 days (9-10 day's = average length between feeding, but they are not all fed at the same day). I feed while watching tv, only four at a time max. They are usually allowed a couple of mins after eating to get out of feeding mode.

When the baby's are born I feed them in 2 or 3 groups on consecutive day's, every 5-7 day's. One group takes an evening to feed, because I also handle/check them and clean spot their tubs. I like to take my time for that, it's not only duty's but the fun of the hobby IMO. It's a calming/relaxing ritual :)

I used to do IHERP but now I use excel and note cards to track my geckos. I'm gonna do IHERP for my snakes. I built a 4x4 rack that holds around 60 tubs and we're building another. We also have a grow out rack for hold backs. I would never have reached the number if I didn't have the support of 2 brothers and my dad who all regularly help pull babies, feed and weigh geckos. We only plan on maybe having 75 adults. I did just buy a male zero het patty for my female! Super zeros in 2012 anyone :grin01:

I have 22 snakes in my house, right now? 3 are here on breeding loan. 21 corns and a FL king. I bred 2 pairs last year and have 4 or 5 planned for this year. I think my carrying capacity is somewhere around 30 snakes...

Hi Blut
We are comming from completely different angles it seems
I was under the impression that they need handling in order to be "domesticated" please pay attention to the "'s
You keep your snakes like fish in an aquarium...well i mean just to look at
Something I dont see the point at personally but again no offence ment, differnt strokes for differnt folks . (Like Live feeding or not, Boa fan or not or cats or dogs person)

I think it's great that snakes (MOST snakes) don't need to be handled every day in order to stay tame and be healthy. It means that you can go away for a week or 2 and just leave an extra large bowl of water and they will be fine. They really are great pets for busy people.

Oh yep thats great...thats why i have cats and not dogs..... a cat can do without me for a weekend. I'd love a dog, but i cant't

No its als that i like handling mine...
(Damn why do some things here read back so awfull...luckely i only have one corn and not two pythons)

There is something mesmerising about that thing winding around your fingers and ocasionally settling

LOL that's a way to look at it :) But I do like the interaction when handling, most of the time I add a little 'cuddle' time when handling them for feeding.
And especially if my largest boa is out and about, I really feel like taking her out, and look at her in awe :)

My boyfriend really loves watching the snakes doing their things, he is not afraid of them but prefers to watch their behavior above handling them. He spends more time watching them then me actually, and then he calls me if he spots poo :poke:

Lol Blut you need a bit more work on your wrigling then.
Something wrong with the BF
I prefer Erika Terpstra above a Boa.....easier to lift and all
and I would cuddle neither of them

Let me get this straight. I go on vacation for a week. All i need to do is make sure my corn has water? I mean I would feed him before leaving but how long can a baby or yearling go safely without food? I'm just curious. I know my hermit crabs needed lots of attention it was hard to leave for very long.
