How to euthanize

What I'm curious is to how dry ice is kept to begin with, and whether those temperatures can be accomplished in regular household conditions... Chest freezers and the like, specifically--those that already freeze colder than the average fridge/freezer.

You treat it just like normal ice. To keep water ice frozen you need to refrigerate it to 32* F. To keep dry ice frozen you refrigerate it to –109.3* F. Most house hold freezers will not go down to zero much less below zero.

A friend of mine breeds her own mice. She told me that at first she used a CO2 chamber for her pinkies but after some research she stopped because pinkines can last awhile with little oxygen, so the death was slow. She switched to hypothermia. Putting water in the freezer and taking it out right before it becomes frozen and placing the pinkies in that. It takes seconds.

I'm sorry but I LMFAO at Wade's answers! It goes right along with the answer I always give to people asking for most humane ways of killing mice. THERE ARE NONE! LOL! Why? Because humane and killing just don't go together. So, either feed live, gas 'em, whack 'em against a wall (thank you,Lori!),whatever! They're going to die, either way. We're not talking about pets.

This subject is a No brainer. We as people tend to humanize animals. We give them emotions, feeling and such. I don't mean to sound harsh, but come on. Are we sure they feel like we do. Do we know what Humane is to a mouse? They eat there young. I see no humane emotions going on there.

I personally THUMP them. I hold the tail tight and wack them on the table/counter. Sometimes if it is a large mouse I sever the spinal cord by pinning the head down just behind the neck and pulling the tail.

Do I like my mice? Yes I do. I have several that are pets, But I try not to give them human emotions. I am higher on the food chain than that.

I don't think it's a matter of giving them emotions...I think it's a matter of killing them with as less pain and suffering as possible.

There have been plenty of experiments out there showing that mice feel pain...

See i agree i just want to know the fastest least painful way. I think i will make a co2 chamber if i decide to breed mice.

Yes i got 3 snakes now and with money some what tight i was thinking i should start a mice colony. I was just wondering how to you euthanize the mice. thanks everyone.

I made a small CO2 chamber.A nice design I think. I used a 2.5 qt container and an empty BBQ sauce bottle. I put holes in the BBQ sauce bottle where it slims before forming the top opening, cut a hole in the lid of the conatiner, used clay (its what I had) to make a seal, and baked to set the clay. I can do I'd say 6 fuzzies or hoppers, 4 weanlings, or 2 adults at a time. I'll try to get a picture of it when my husband gets home. My camera is in the car.

Saddly I had to use it today as my son got into my mice and accidentally broke the front legs on my male hopper that was going to be the male in my 2nd colony. Now I'll just have to have 1 big colony with 6 females and one male. At least I know my chamber works :(

Its what I did. I forgot to mention in my other answer that I use baking soda and vinegar to make the CO2 for it. I put about 2 TBsp of baking soda in the BBQ sauce bottle and pour the vinegar into it in 4 intervals. I pour, pop the lid on and wait til it stops fizzing, add more vinegar, lid and wait, pour, lid and wait, pour, lid and wait. about 4 minutes later the mouse is dead. No seizures, no freaking out, seemed to fall asleep then slowly stopped breathing. Looked about as painless as it can get to me.

3 snakes..
Why don't you find someone local who breeds rodents or order a small quanity of frozen..??? I wish I only had to deal with 3 snakes.

Right now thats what im going to do. But when my red tail gets big. Its going to cost me 80 dollars a month to get shipped 4jumbo rats to me. So its a lot cheaper to either breed them myself or go to petco and buy one at a time. Im just looking down the road. Plus corns are addicting im sure im going to be getting more once i build a rack for them. It would be great if you could post some photos of your home made co2 chamber.

well i just watched that documentary on Steve-o on MTV today, and he gave me an idea... haha

not sure if anybody on here watched that but when he was inhaling that nitrogen he was using what looked like a soda siphon.. i was wondering if this would work to euthanize mice just like the paintball set up? has anybody tried this?

This is mine. I got the container from target. The co2 canister and the conector from a paint ball store. All together it cost me about $50 to set up and with killing mice and rat's every week I fill the bottle about every 6 months for $4. I kill the mice and rats at the same time. I hate killing things but even I can do it this way.

There ya go! Its not pretty but it does the job! :wavey:

Didn't think to say how much it cost. . . hmm, the container was $2.68 (tax included), the clay I got a pound for $6 but I only used a tiny amount so probably worked out to a few cents worth. The BBQ sauce bottle use kinda a recycle thing so I count it as free. With only 1 snake to feed at the moment I figured small was a good start. I'm working out how to make it better so I might be able to offer them to others for like $5 to help those not really confident in making their own.

Henry2009, My methods are not as "Humane" as others, as you can see. And I just re-read the post. You might/or you might of already, Look into the supplies and cost of raising and keeping mice/ rats. Not to mention the time it takes to maintain, clean and check on the little buggers. You mentioned a tight buget. It might be still more affordable to buy your feeders than to raise them. Since you only have 3 snakes at this time. As your collection gets bigger, it then might be more affordable to raise mice/ rats. What I did is get together with a buddy and raise the mice/ rats for both our collections as well as the local pet shop. I started with 12 adult mice at the end of December and now have 10 colonies and 4 pet mice. They produce 291 pinkies last month according to my records.(It was a good month)

And to add you might still want to make a CO2 chamber. Buying live mice/ rats is cheaper that frozen where I am at. So buy them live and gas when you need them.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Hey Carnivorouszoo, When you use the Baking soda and Vinegar, It produces the CO2 but does it produce any other side effects? I know Vinegar is smelly does it mask the scent of the mouse? Does Rose react to them differently? Than maybe before you started gassing in this method? Just some questions I thought of, Might think of trying your method....

Keep in mind human noses are WEAK compared to like ALL other animals.

I noticed no different smell on the mouse than before I had to put him in there.

Saddly my Rose is too small for this guy she is on Peach fuzzies and he is a large hopper (borderline weanling?) He is like 4 times as big around as my little Rose. So I have no idea if she would react differently to it. I only used it the once so far. I set it up so I could clear out any males I missed that are in the groups of females I decide to grow out for breeding. I imagine it will be a while before she can try the gassed mouse.

You really don't need alot of vinegar to make it work, and the smell isn't that strong with small amounts at least not that I have noticed. I work with vinegar a lot so I could probably not be the best to ask since you get used to stuff the more you are around it.

I do advise airing any mice gassed this way before freezing (only for maybe 15 minutes) as I find odors to be stronger once a frozen item is defrosted. I have a theory that if you let the smell dissipate before freezing then the smell noticed when its defrosted will more likely be the mouse itself. All I know is that I did not notice any vinegar odor when I put it in the freezer. I'm expecting more pinks soon and will sell him to the pet shop when I take in extra pinks.
