How To Fix Screen Damage on my Corn's Tank?

Dolemite

Hi! I'm Scooter!
Hi guys...I've actually been a member for a while, but I haven't posted in ages. But I'm hoping you fine guys and gals can help me out with a minor issue.

First of all, that's Scooter over there on the left. He's a swell little guy.

However, my girlfriend's cat has lately become fascinated with him, and often when our backs are turned we'll find him sitting on top of Scooter's tank. I'm sure it's a combination of this bizarre shoelace of a creature moving around and the heat from his lamp (cats like heat, too), but he gets up there whenever he gets the chance. I keep chasing him off and have recently taken to locking the cat out of the bedroom altogether (where I keep Scooter's tank).

Anyway, I noticed the other day that the cat must have clawed a little hole on the screen of Scooter's tank. My question is, have any of you somehow damaged a screen, and if so, is there a simple way to repair it? It's a small hole that Scooter couldn't possibly fit through, but I don't want to take any chances when it comes to my little orange pal. Can it be fixed, or do I have to replace the lid somehow?

Thanks!

How about a little hot glue . Only takes a minute to cool and would protect him from the ruf edges . That's what I would use .

Interesting! I do have a hot glue gun, so I'll give that a shot now just to make sure the rough edges are covered. Thanks!

But I was wondering if there was any way to completely patch it as well?

Well, at the moment I patched it with a small piece of packing tape on either side of the hole (one piece above, another piece below, so they're sticking together) until I can figure out the right way to use the hot glue gun or I find a way to permanently repair it. Any suggestions are welcomed. :)

I would be weary of using tape. Snakes are notorious for unpeeling tape and getting themselves stuck. I wonder if you could use a screen repair kit from hardware store - the trick will just be making sure the sharp edges are sealed - the hot glue sounds like a good idea though.

Also, for the cats, I read somewhere that you can lay baking cooling racks across the top for a couple of reasons. (1) The noise of landing on it might discourage your cat from ever doing it again. (2) If they do get up there, there weight will be distributed to the frames of the viv rather than the screen. I also have a cat but I keep the door with my snake in it closed and she is only allowed in there with supervision (but never near the snake).

Best of luck!

Hi. Baking cooling racks are a great idea! I'll pick some up tonight. Thanks for the help.

As for patching it, yeah, I was afraid that there would be rough edges. I might have to replace the entire lid. Time to call Zilla and see if they can help.

Hmm...how about just patching the hole on the OUTSIDE of the screen? In that case, the rough edges would be facing outward and not where Scooter could get near them, yes?

Do you have pliers? If so, you could bend the sharp metal edges outward. Then, cover that part of the cage with paper towels taped down on one or both sides of the lid, and maybe put a weight on top of the whole so he can't lift the paper towel and cut a small part of his tail or tongue on the metal.

To keep the cat out, maybe keep some catnip in a nearby room to distract it. I make a "sssss" sound at my cat when it gets close to the vivarium or Red when I'm holding him or when I wake up and hear it tapping on the tank's glass. Now he pauses when he sees me near Red and turns and runs.
