Hey ARiley, the reason people normally prefer UTH is because you not only more easily know exactly what the temperature is where the snake is through a probed thermometer, but also because a corn snake benefits far more from belly heat to digest its food. If lights are working for you, that's good, but there are lots of really good reasons that you may want to consider researching about switching to a UTH! At the very least, you can get an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer with a probe at Walmart for about $12. This was you can know the exact temperature on the cool and hot side of your snake's environment.
I live in RI so it doesn't get too hot here. The ice packs are a great idea! I don't mind the heat and I hate running the AC due to the electric bill, so I will definitely try this on those hot days.
Ah I have a restaurant grade probe thermometer that I use to check out his situation once in awhile and luckily it says his tank thermometer is correct
And as far as digestion goes I wish he'd slow it down!!! I feel like I'm cleanin snake poo more often than sifting the ferrets' litter boxes! Lol
Hey and if he's gonna poo so much I might as well ask do they make snake treats? Prolly not eh...I just wish I could give him something other than a mouse once in awhile cuz he hides to digest for a day or two.
Oh and he can get under one of his water dishes he just doesn't seem to like to.
