Hubby found a Cornsnake in the basement...

Congrats on a fun find. The surprises I find tend more toward brown widow spiders and palmetto bugs - uck! If you don't want that freeloader, just go ahead and send him/her down south to me.

We haven't had any snow that actually laid, so that's not a worry. ;) If the snake skin he found in the basement is from this snake, he's been in here for 3-4 months at least.

But wait a sec... If the skin is from this snake, does it mean it hadn't eaten in 3 or 4 months or does it mean you have loose rodents in your basement?

Maybe you have more than 1 lose in your basement. I would keep looking. You know people always keep more than 1 corn and maybe more escaped from the same person. I'm intrigued. Beautiful find anyway. :D

In a separate note, are you planning to keep it or are you planning to place notes in the neighborhood lamp posts advertising your find?

It's a pretty Amel and it looks in pretty good shape.

I found an Amel once in my schools courtyard it was a shock. I was looking for a Iguana someone abandon there and found a snake too.

I would name him Lost. Because he is, and because he's mysterious. He's where he isn't supposed to be.

I don't have rodents running rampant in my house. It's possible for a snake to survive several months without a meal. Looking at him, you can tell he hasn't eaten in a while. He's not in horrible shape, but could use a little TLC before being rehomed. No, I won't keep him because I don't keep plain Jane Amels...But I will get him up to the appropriate weight and then rehome him. He's already been treated for mites (preventative) and looked over for any ticks or scrapes and he looks good. Should only need to get a little meat on his bones. ;)

What's it's temperament like anyways?

He seems pretty mellow. Not jumpy or trying to "run" from me with what little handling I did before putting him in QT.

DID YOU LOOSE ONE A WHILE AGO AND FORGET ABOUT IT?

Like I said, I don't keep plain Jane Amels (especially a male) so he's not one of mine. I have one Amel here, and she's het for Charcoal Stripe and I know she's safely in her rack. :)

Oh he is so pretty.....if I lived by you I would be at your house right now asking for him...I would name him Mystic (because he's a mystery) and I would love him and feed him! I have a soft spot for plane Jane Amels!

I'm with you... I'd have him in a heartbeat...

Problems...

  1. Too far.
  2. Wife.
  3. No more space.
  4. Wife.
  5. No more snake money.
  6. Wife!

LOL!

I know... I love her and her "limiting" ability is frustrating, but a "saving grace" as well.

Lol.. It's all good. I was talking to my GF last night about snakes and if we would get a house together later on.. She was like once we have kids they are gone.. And I was like bull ! They are gonna have they're own room and the kids there own room Lol. But, she limited me to 20.. Which I don't think is too bad and I should be able to abide by that rule. Lol

Yeah, I'd definitely take the steps you're taking. And when I posted ads for him I'd not put a description or a picture. I'd just say "Found someone's pet snake. Please call and describe it." That way you won't get people and kids lying to you about it and taking an animal they know nothing about taking care of.

Also, maybe it was an obese snake when it got in your basement and his little adventure did him some good, lol!

Sounds like a punchline from a Groucho Marx joke...

"How he ended up in the basement, I'll NEVER know!"

I won't be putting ads up looking for the owner. The likeliness of finding the true owner is slim to none and I really don't want dozens of calls of people looking for a free snake. Based on the snakes weight, it's been MIA from its owner for several months...If the snake was a more recent MIA (if by chance the shed skin from several months ago wasn't from this snake), the owner didn't feed him enough.

I'll get him plumped up and re-homed locally. Hopefully he does well for me. Going to try a small meal today for him. Last night I had to clean his bin because their was a smidgen of poo, so he must have found something to eat since he's been on the loose.

Finders Keepers.... lol
I think he's gorgeous but then I am mom to a pretty straightforward amel - male at that. lol.

This was a great thread to read, very happy.

I had a hard time explaining to my fiancee that a buddy just "gave" me a brand new rbi rack with a dozen high end baby corns in it. My limit was a dozen and I am at 32, plus I plan on another 10-12 at the next show. They just followed me home babe can I keep em pleeese...LOL
