I am getting a reptile room!!!!!

I ahve read the past threads that I have been posted. I do not appreciate people assuming I feel bad or am trying to protect anyone in this situation or either and I agree that your pet should be taken care of and be kept healthy. I do not think being harsh to the point of referring to anything as a slaughterhouse I think that is childish. So do not point me out assume I have any level or lack of understanding as to what the full level of the situation is. That is rude on your behalf to assume such things. Which seems to be something that goes on here far too often. There are just better ways of dealing with people maybe I am wrong and have no understanding maybe if people stop making one liners and take a second to think of something that might be useful to the person owning these reptiles. Being told you should not own reptiles or I give those five more weeks till they are dead is not constructive. Thank you for letting me know I am not aware of the full situation or any other shortcomings I must have because i gave out some sympathy to how I felt people were dealing with this. Jynx you don't have to be harsh and yell at people if you sit someone down and talk to them you are much more likely to get through to them as opposed to letting them know they are murdered and being harsh and yelling. I hope this situation gets solved and the rest of the reptiles do well and the people involved make the proper decisions. But that is not my role we can only give our opinions and insight and I urge poeple to give their insight and not their anger. Sorry for blabbing and please alert me of anything else I have overlooked.

That chip on your shoulder is gonna get heavy someday

cMo, you have taken a stand on this forum twice that I am aware of; once when someone was called out because of their childish antics, and this thread (which ironically is also about someone and their childish antics). There appears to be a trend here. :)

You may not agree with the way others choose to voice their opinions, but the complete lack of tact you show in your responses destroys whatever credibility you may have had. ;)

countMeout, why are you making this all about you all of a sudden, this is hopefully to help a kid make the right decision, and not just get reptiles because mommy and daddy will get whatever he wants, and if something dies it almost seems like the mom and dad are making everything better by offering him more snakes and other reptiles which in my opinion is not a good thing. That is all anyone is saying this is not an attack on you. Everyone has made it quite clear their interests have only been the animals which last time i checked was the important issue here. And princesses questions are definatley things to consider, i only have the ammount i do because i am done school, and have establised my own place and have a job and know my animals will get the care they need.

Wow, I don't know why I am being brought into this, because as far as
I know, I am THE ONLY ONE who voiced my opinions without jumping down his throat, and offered advice, instead of just telling him off and leaving it at that. I saw no one else offer that.

I'm not quite sure why this is going on still, because its dumb. Thanks for telling me how to voice my opinions...since that's the only right that I, as a human being, am undeniably entitled to.

My advice (take it if you will) is not to throw rocks in a glass house hun...I didn't see you do anything more than whine about how we gave advice. Thats fine if you think we chose the wrong method...as a human, you are entitled to an opinion as well...but just remember that your opinion is merely that, and thats what we will take it as. I'm not sure how this subject went from Rep Addicts husbandry methods to how you feel about how we addressed this issue, but this thread has gotten ridiculous now. I think you need to know when to quit. People have their own ways of addressing things, and they will always differ from your. Accept it and get over it. We don't care about how people are going to react to our advice giving methods...we care about the animals. And this is something that has been going on for a LONG time...too long. Trust me, we all started out being very nice at first...and we kept seeing no change because he still posted threads such as this. We're not all heartless, but when you see the same thing over and over again... and I'll just stop there....

The end

I will happily end this "discussion" I apologize for defending myself but it seemed to be somewhat appropriate as the postings went on. All i wanted was a little more consideration and JYNX you did a great job of that and I commended you for it. I brought you back up on the too harsh comment I think there is. I am sorry for labeling my opinion and getting defensive. It is kind of tough when 3-5 people jump on your back. Apparently it was called for, sorry for wasting anyones time.

1. I understand you've been keeping reptiles since you were 7, so have I but how old are you now?

I'm 14

2. Tegu's are powerful monitor lizards aren't they? They have sharp claws and teeth and aren't really 'cuddly'. What is your reason for wanting them?

I love them. I have been looking at monitors and tegus in the pet shops and have been wanting one for a while.

3. What are your goals with your reptile room? Do you want to eventually be a large scale breeder? Are these all to be display animals?

I want to breed certain morphs but mostly albino and pastel balls. I am going to display animals and hopefully own a pet store.

4. Are the rodents to be pets or feeders? Are you prepared to keep up with all the cleaning that keeping a colony of feeders requires?

Feeders. I know that rodents require alot of time. I help out with the rats at the pet store. They have 106 tubs that have a 1.2 pair of rats in each. I help feed, water, and clean them 1 time a week. They are on a watering ststem.

5. I'm assuming you're a student. What happens when you want to go off on a holiday/spring break? -or off to college? I was just away for 3 days and had to do a pretty intensive stint of 'work' to get everything ready for my 10 snakes to be comfortable....how many are you after in the end? -or if you have a heavy study load and can't give the 3+ hours a day to maintaining a large collection? -what suffers then? You'r marks, freetime or your animals?

I have no plans for college. I am looking at less than 50. I have from 3:15 til 9:00 monday- thursday and I work on friday saterday and sunday.

6. A large collection will require somewhat greater funds (to feed, heat, house, replace UV tubes for the lizards, etc). Mummy and daddy I'm sure will expect you to contribute to the elevated electricity bills if you're running heating all year round and they can't be expected to be buying mice etc for you all the time. Do you have a job? Do you have time for a job? Are you willing to sink all your income into your reptile room?

I have a job. I work for my parents buisness. I get paid 5 dollars an hour for cleaning or 10 dollars an hour for fabercation. I pay about 10 dollars a week on my pets(bird litter, food, toys. Dog bones for my sisters puppy. Mice for the snakes)

7. You say you have the help of your family who know about reptiles but 2 snakes died in almost as many days in your (collective) care. What's to say this doesn't happen again?

I messed up with the waterbowl I had a hole that was to small in the lid.

8. You say you put in so much research but then I draw your attention to this thread you started... http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18430
...Asking such basic questions doesn't sound like you really did much reasearch does it?

I don't see a basic question on there at all. Is it about the car ride or the scenting?

now here we have it a 14 year old acting exactley like 14 y/o's do. you get things because you see them at the petstore that about sums up why everyone was trying to talk you out of getting more reptiles...but hey im tired...hopefully they live thats all i have to say

and please i am new to corns.... why does reptile addict say that the hole was too small....why the hell would you ever have a lid on a water bowl, maybe im stupid i dont know please tell me where you got the info that you should have a lid on your water bowl please. i just really cant see the logic in it

Mamybe...maybe...that particular animal kept tracking substrate into his water bowl, and he was simply trying something new. That isn'tthe point. Hre knows not to do it any longer. mosdef you are really nit picking on the kid now. You're 25 and he's 14.

for a 14 yearold, he seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders, and since he's already set on what he's doing, why not focus on helping him to learn instead of trying to talk him out of it? He isn't going to change his mind, and I dunno that he should anyhow. Sure, it will restrict his social life and school plans (which, rep addict...can and do change,, don't rule college out just yet!) but, large collections become burdens on people of any age...it will no more affect his schooling than a 20 yearold's entry level job or house rental.

You say that you're just starting out mosdef....wouldn't it have been nice to start a few years ago so that you might have an established collection if that is your goal? Lets try and help eachother acheive our herp goals.

I'm not new to corns and I haven't got a clue why there was a lid on the water bowl. :shrugs:

I'm new too, and I've been wondering the same thing. I have never seen or heard of anyone on this forum or otherwise talk about putting a lid of any sort on a water bowl.

There's something else that comes to mind. I've read that if a snake escapes, you can set a bottle trap (cut the top off, turn it around in the bottle and secure it...so it basically looks like a minnow trap) to catch them again. This sounds an awful lot like this water bowl thing... got in and couldn't get out. Let's face it...the hole wasn't too small. If it was, then it wouldn't have gotten in the bowl in the first place.

Rep_addict: Why the lid? And are you still using lids on your water bowls?

Lids on bowls...

I've seen it in a book. Once. Made no sense to me. The idea was to avoid sloshing when opening and closing drawers, if I recall.

Perhaps if keeping hatchlings in deli cups, water bowls (or PVC caps) would be notched out that way, too.

I still can scarcely imagine a snake getting in and drowning. But I never imagined chickens as housepets or snakes being brought into public places to force the public to accept them before these forums! :crazy02: :crazy02: :crazy02:

yeah i was getting carried away, hopefully you do whats best and make sure you know what you are doing this time especially with monitors, they are alot more work than snakes trust me. BTW i am new to snakes not caring for reptiles, i have 3 bearded dragons and 3 water dragons, dont have to tell me about a few hours of work every day!!lol couldnt imagine what i would do if i had to go away for more than 3 days. i geuss im just trying to get rep addict to think about things like that. And sometimes a 14 year old might not understand that point i know when i was like that young i wanted everything!!!

I have had him for more than a week and I didn't just get him because I liked him. I have been trying to find a nice argus around here and when I see one in the paper its sold when I call. I guesse after seeing an adult tegu I just fell in love. I am also attracted to the fact that argentines eat 50/50 as an adult as in 50 meat 50 veggies which means not as many trips to the petstore. I had a cage set up and a uv/basking lamp plus substrate all ready.

About the water bowl its sorta a water hide. It uses a shoe box with a large hole in the lid so the snake can hide while he soaks. Since bloods are no nervous a couple people I talked to recomended this. They said 'make sure the hole isn't to small' I guesse I didn't make the hole big enough. I am not going to be getting all of these in 1 day or even 1 month. I am going to have the set ups perfect(temps humidity and feeders) before getting more animals.

I don't think reptile_addict is acting exactly like 14 years olds do. I turned 15 not too long ago, so I guess that made me feel a little prejudged.
But one bad apple spoils the whole bunch, I guess.

I have seen this quite a bit. They are even sold with precut holes here www.superiorenterprise.com. The logic is you can use cheep deli cups that are disposible without the snake tipping the light bowl. They are also good for reptiles that require dry climates. They help to keep the humidity that comes from the water bowl down.

I think they are a good idea if you do it right. I used it for my dehydrated ball I took in about 1 month again. He was w/c and sick. Got him treated. He was dehydrated because he would never go out in the open or he would be stressed out. It just helped him hydrate and be safe at the same time.
