I finally caught one this year.

Lucky, I caught one last year and he skunked me AND bit me. He had red along his sides. I don't know anything about garters though.

Great find! I wish we had red-sided garters in New England. I think that it’s one of the most beautiful garter colors. It’s not an uncommon coloration in several garter species. I'm guessing you cought a Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis. Did it look like this?
