I think I need a mentor or coach... handling

Well handling isnt nessacry all the time. Handling can stress snakes and scince they have emotionless faces we can't truly tell what they are thinking. I handle as little as possible. all my snakes are tame and very calm. It all depends on who you are and what you want for your snake. I mean I handle when doing reptile education shows, videos , and cleanings. PM me if you have any questions

I handled mine tons, especially when they were young and I disagree about the stress. I put one of my corns down on the couch and then I sit, and 10 times out of 10 times, she will come to me and curl around my neck.

Some snakes may never adapt to handling because lets face it, it isnt the norm for them......but I have yet to see affects of any stress. I just dont handle when they are digesting.

If you DONT handle, and lets say, someone retains the tail tip after a shed....you are going to have a snake that is very upset you are messing with its tail.

Well before I mak a psot I'm gonna be posting and It is not rude. If you have a problem PM me.
Ok handleing is a very conraversal topic. I handle after shed, when doing educational shows, and occasionally when Im just sitting on my bed posting of reptile forums. Snakes are not dogs. They were not bred to be a handleing animal. Sometimes snakes move around when stressed. snakes are not a social animal...they don't love you. They love your heat. I have docile animals that have never been handled once.

I dont think your post is rude at all. You make a good point, they arent dogs, not that my dogs like to be handled either LOL.....I think the thing is alot of people enjoy their collection and want to handle them. Enjoying is handling. I know when I first began to research corns I seem to find they were ones who dealt with handling well, as a whole.

Also, two of my girls are getting fat and I take them out so they can move around a little. Otherwise they sit there and poo and wait to be fed......Some of them get lazy when they realize they are being fed like clockwork and dont need to ever come out.

its ok.. i am with the school of just reaching in. If the snake bites it bites. Its not gonna kill ya and if it does bite just don't jerk back. Most the time its not a feeding response and its just get you to let go. Just hold it.

Here is a boa that tagged me by mistake. Not that bad, she let go after a few minutes. I dont wear gloves, I am cautious with my snakes but some times it happens.

Like when I get my yellow conda in 9 weeks im gonna handle alot due to their size I need a tame one

well actually the are of a yellow conda is not very hard...a male at least. 5-7 foot about that of a BCO. They are not as thick either. I have a 6x2x2 in the making. I'm getting a Cb '08 male. Males are small. I have the support of a whole forum. The one in my sig. The care of yellow condas is like a boa with more humidoty and a large water bowl.

you know support of a forum is not going to help you when things go wrong.

This is a snake for EXPERIENCED keepers. Yes you have an odd ball snake but this is not a snake for someone of your experience level. I know advanced boa keepers that have had no luck with them. The people i know have been keeping boids longer then you have been alive.

But hey, its your parents money.. what do i care.

and why is it that thousands of BCC and BCIs are sold every year to kids but its okay for them

actually its MY money I am earning it. I have easources. People to contact back up plans everything. I don't want to hijak this thread PM me if you are still haveing issues

WOW.... I'm so grateful for all the replies. I felt awesome when I read that you think my special little guy is cute... He truly is adorable and very much a part of my life; I certainly can't imagine life without him.

Tricksterpup... I saw your pic on another thread and was very impressed!! I've been bitten before by my son's snake. It was quick and totally my fault. It was before I got Samson.

Well, today is Monday and my husband and I have been moving his office (as in it took us 3-days with a u-haul) tonite we got home after 10pm... Samson's light was already off and he is burrowed and I haven't yet dug him out. It's midnight now.

Am I a failure?

Regards the issue of handling. I fully want to and believe that it's worth it. I'll take a bite or two if I have to. I am worried about pulling away if he bites tho. I'd hate to hurt him but I don't *think* he will bite.

So how 'bout tomorrow.... I'm up for Tuesday, he'll be ready to feed again Thursday. So I have to do it. I've loved it every time I have handled him. He's been very curious, and very well behaved.

I just need to keep myself accountable to you guys. Make sure I give Samson the attention he needs. I know logically they aren't emotional or feel affection, but I swear sometimes he looks my way it seems he is affectionate....lol.... and, he loves the camera, it's like he poses. As soon as I start clicking he puts on a show.

Thanks again everyone.... send me positive vibes and I will be a handling champion like you guys in no time... promise. :)

Do it.. and you will be a champion. When you finally do it and just feel comfortable, I want you to post a picture of it.
Also take a copy yourself and post it on his cage. Everytime you reach in look at that.

I have a rather large sonoran gopher here, around 6.5 feet. It took me a year for me to hold her when I got her as an adult. I would stick my hand in the cage and lay it on her. Just to let her know touch doesnt mean bad touch. She now allows me to hold her.

But dont be ashamed. I show that picture to show others that if I can handle a boa bite, others can handle a corn biting them
Another way to look at a snake biting you is that your pet's head is probably no bigger than your thumb. Cut that in half, you will have its mouth. now really how big are those teeth? Not very..

Now if this is an adult king snake.. all bets are off and your on your own. ;)
They like to Chew.. lol

I AM a champion!!!!

I dit it.... I did it.... I did it...

After my last post, I looked up and Samson was peeking out.
I took off the top of his viv and he poked his head over the side.
I reached my hand to him and he slithered up my arm.

We just had about 15 minutes of fun... I took some pics will upload them at the office tomorrow.

Thank you everyone... I really feel like if I keep making a committment to you guys and say when I am going to do it, then I will keep my word. I'm a bit of a stickler for doing whatever I say I am going to do.

He was very active for about 10 minutes then he sat still for about 2 minutes then was active again. To be honest, he seemed a little bit disappointed when I put him back in his viv. He's just gone down one of his tunnels.

I'm grinning from ear-to-ear.
I love my snake!!!!

Have been quietly lurking the thread, but wanted to throw in my congratulations! Your enthusiasm must be infectious, because I smiled when I read your post. :)

i have a ghost snake who does like to bite but it doesnt really hurt at all. hold your fist in a ball that way they wont bite you and grab with your free hand. if she does bite simple push her mouth forward that way the fangs come loose from the skin and peel her mouth back doesnt hurt them at all. but hope this helps.

I'm still smiling Leeann... its so much fun.

This is so good. I have a number of tips on how to handle the bite if it happens. It's reassuring to see tricksterpup survive the boa kiss. I also read somewhere that if they don't let go to run some water over the bite in progress. I think just knowing you have a plan. that's confidence building.

Been lurking too, so happy to see you're able to handle him now. Don't worry just use gentle but firm handing and you two will get along fine. Just watch to make sure he doesn't try to sneak inside the couch like mine do.

Happy congratulations, and hope to see some more pictures too :D

The fact that corns are fantastic climbers helps when handling them. They have a great skill at climbing and it's great to watch them climb around. They adjust to your hands good I think.

As you can see I'm not so good with handling and taking pictures simultaneously, but here it is.

I think it's so awesome that I could come to this forum, ask for support, get it and have success. Thanks Everyone!!!
