I wanna get another corn, but.....

One Snake Wonder
I wanna get another corn but i was told they cant be housed in the same enclosure... what should i do???

thats what i was gonna do.

this made me laugh. im sorry.

maybe build a small rack. i have one in my room im building that is gonna replace my nightstand thing. its gonna have four tubs and still be able to have alarm clock and lamp on top. and house 4 more snakes. so its just a way to useful furniture and also useful enclosure space.

if you dont ever plan on getting more than just one more. then look on craiglist. you can find cages and all sorts of fish tanks.

Build a Rack and they will come.... then build another and more will come... I know, for it has happened to me :)

True but you are not someone who obviously is young. you probably have your own home or the budget to keep snakes.

I have seen and rescued to many snakes from people who can not make the commitment in keeping animals like that.

True, I am 45, don't smoke or drink in excess so I do have a few dollars. I buy my mice in bulk and never over pay for my corns. Some may call that being responsible :)

I dont have the money to get another tank but maybe i will look on craigs list just to give it a try...if that doesnt happen will a simple tub work for a little bit untill i get the tank for him?

A tub will work perfectly fine as you can see from the pictures. If you're just getting one more then you wouldn't have to build a rack for it. However, if you can't afford another enclosure at this time, maybe you should hold off on getting another snake? Just my humble opinion, really. We've started picking up stuff for snakes that we don't even have simply because,as another member put it, we have a knack for finding abused and neglected reptiles often. That way I always have everything ready for another reptile just in case. We also always have money put away for these unexpected newbies to our household. But,if I didn't have the money to set up another enclosure, then I don't have the money for another snake.

Along with the extra enclosure you will need a heat pad, Thermometer, Thermostat to regulate the temps, bowls for water, hides.
There's ALOT more expense then just an extra enclosure. Please make sure your able to afford another snake before truly going out and buying one.

I know I only have 1 snake now and he is perfectly taken care of, he has everything he needs he eats every week with no problems, and the tank i bought came with EVERYTHING he needed including, 1 hide (i bought him 1 more), bedding, water bowl, ect. and it was fairly cheap, but im only 13 and can take care of 2 snakes, for ive done it before. I guess im not the one without the money, its my mom...:p

Question!

How do you keep the temperature variant in the plastic tubs like that? Is there enough air circulation? It seems like there's a so-so amount of light (I know they can survive but I wouldn't want to lock a snake up in the dark just to appease my bleeding heart) but is it enough?

Exactly!!! Ive thought about that many times, thats why i have been having 2nd thoughts about the tub option!!! I like the way u think , "think about the snakes!!"

Well. I'm a semi-new snake owner (three weeks) and I'm reading everything I can get my hands on, but right now when I see something new I get flaily and ask a lot of questions.

...Then again, I might just have a very spoiled snake? xD

U know what ill stick with my tank option, no tubs in my opinion. :p

I know a lot of breeders use them! But I didn't know whether they were long term, or what. But that is a pretty fancy set-up (and so clean).

I have used tubs for my Corns since 1990. I heat the entire snake room at 80* by day and 76* at night. I keep only colubrids, Corns, Hognose, and Scaleless Ratsnakes. I use 32 qt tubs with plenty of holes for ventilation. Actually the tubs help maintain a good humidity level for shedding, (ever note lots of fish tank photos posted with towels over the tops to keep in humidity) my snakes rarely have a problem shed.
I can remove the snake dump the bedding and easily clean the tub in a minute or two and twice a month they can go in the dish washer and be sterilized, Much more efficient and easier than washing out a 30 or 40 gallon tank, healthier for the snake also.
I have 40 snakes and all are handled at least twice a week by myself and family members. Yes I breed, but they still are all my pets.
I feel a rack system is much cleaner, than tanks, I have never had mites or fly problems. and as far as light, the room has natural lighting all day and as the seasons change, so does the lighting period...Just like in nature...well what do you know!!....besides, give a snake a chance and he'll hide in a dark small spot everytime. thats what makes them feel safe and secure.
Don't want to sound like I am carring on, just defending my husbandry, when questioned. Now If you'll excuse me, it's time to handle some snakes, or as I like to think...exercise them. It prevents egg binding ya know :)

Well what does your mom think about another snake. If money is tight.. then I suggest not looking to get one. I bet your mom is scared about the money if she has to take care of you and maybe if you have some brothers and sisters.

I know you want another snake but talk to your mom and also listen to her. If she says no or if the money is really tight as you say..
I guess im not the one without the money, its my mom...:p
Well this is goning to cause problems. Like I said she is probably scared cause she has to pay for the bills, feed you and take care of the home, put gas in the car and so on. Thats a lot of work.
And bringing in another snake may just not be affordable at the time. Cause to heat that cage, cost money.. buying the tub cost money.. feeding the snake cost money.

I think it might be in your family's best interest is to not get another snake. If you are right about your mom not having money.
