I've posted a couple of times in some of the other areas, but I figured it could never hurt to officially introduce myself.

I've been lurking on this forum for a couple months. There is so much helpful information from so many friendly corn enthusiasts! I was excited to see current posts from people that have written books that I have read (Kathy Love comes to mind). It's awesome to be a part of something that the experts are a part of too! I usually feel a little uncomfortable when I join a new forum, mostly because of the general attitude of existing members towards newbies, but I just didn't see that happening here, so I decided to join up. I am oh-so-glad that I did!

I got into cornsnakes a long time ago, but never felt that the time was right until a little over a year ago. I bought Kathy Love's corn manual and read it cover to cover, got my viv set up and went in search of my new snake. I looked at both PetsMart and PetCo in my area and (luckily!) neither had any available. I went home and did some looking through the phonebook and found a place called Pets-A-Plenty (aka UltimateReptiles). Love the shop, love the people, love the animals. I purchased my first corn there (a Reverse Okeetee named Grimm) and couldn't have been happier. Unfortunately, Grimmy got loose in the weeks following Hurricane Ike due to some irritatingly ignorant relatives who took the top off of his viv while I was away. I waited about 6 months before getting another (just in case he showed up again) and got a female Reverse Okeetee from the same place (my little Ryplee). Since then, my collection has expanded to include two more corns. I got incredibly lucky with them... I happened to be leaving the local PetCo and looked at the lost/found/needs-a-home board and saw an ad for "2 big, beautiful corn snakes free to good home." Who could resist that? I called about them, went and saw them and brought them home (along with a Bearded Dragon that needed to go too). The girl who had them had just gotten married and her hubby was NOT a herp guy at all. She needed to downsize and it was just my luck that I was in the right place at the right time! :D The new additions are an adult male Okeetee and an adult female Sunglow Stripe. I recently named them after observing them for a while... the male is IRA (always all caps as it's an acronym for "Insolent Red Arse" as he's taken a liking to the flavor of my fingertips) and the female is "Reenie," a combined name from "Red" and "Meanie" because she is, quite frankly, verymuch both of those.

I have a great love for just about any critter. My house is full of a diverse number of animals ranging from dogs and cats to reptiles and fish. I love talking about them all, so to get it out of my system, I'll list them and then never annoy anyone with this again ;)

I personally have 3 dogs and my roommate has another. Silver is the 13yo Heeler mix and is the pack leader (aka the "alpha bitch" with emphasis on the second part), Steele is a mush of a Rottie, Sabre is our 75lb supermodel Dobie and Riley is the roomie's Lab/Pitty mix (though the roomie has deluded himself into thinking that he's a Boxer mix... :nope:)

There are four felines in the house: Tiny- a Manx with an "I own everything. EVERYTHING." attitude, Miles- a pudgy FEMALE that got named before she was correctly sexed (it's almost as hard to sex a 2 week old kitten as it is to visually sex some other certain animals :D), and then there's Sol and Sylas- brothers from a litter born to an old friend. They're especially dear to me as they and I have the same birthday (albeit 24 years apart). Notably, they were also born on a Friday the 13th...

The remainder category of my "zoo" contains a Chinchilla- Simon aka the noisy creature in that weird-looking cabinet; a Species-Unknown aquatic turtle aptly named Tortuga; a Three-Toed Box Turtle named Neumann (after the road he was almost killed on); the afore-mentioned Beardie- the boyfriend named her Pancake and it was just so derned cute to see him walk around the house with her perched against his chest while he cooed "Paaaannncaaaaaake" to her that I left her with the silly name and then there's the several Betta fish and a couple of gold Gourami scattered about the house as well.

I'm still learning all the time about corns. I consider myself an ultra-noob still and try my best to understand and retain the info I read on here. I struggle a little bit with the genetics and keeping the names straight, but the more I read, the easier it's becoming for me. Please, have patience with me as I learn. This site is a fantastic learning tool and I am very much glad that I found it!

Okay-dokey. If you're still reading this (and haven't fallen asleep), thanks! I'm always open to meeting new people. Drop me a line and say hi! :D

Hello amanda, welcome.
First off, you noticed how nice it is on here. Seems like almost everyone comments on that, it's true.
Second, that's quite a menagerie! Several members have a similar crowd in their houses, you're not alone.
Third, you have some great people on this board from Texas, you're not alone there either.
Fourth, I may fall asleep but not from your post, it's just real late....

Hello and welcome Amanda, glad to have you with us.

Thank you for this post, I'm in a bit of a bad space right now and the vision I got at "a couple of gold Gourami scattered about the house" made me smile, not easy to do right now.

:wavey: Welcome Amanda! That's one of the best introduction posts I've seen in a long time, I'm sure you'll fit right in here :)

Welcome Amanda - sounds like you will fit in just right here with the rest of us crazy pet owners!
And do please post pics of the snakes and the rest of the menagerie when you have time - we do love pics!!

Uh-oh! Pics have been requested! ;) I'll gather some up and post them a little at a time. The new snakes are a little hard to photo because... well-they're a little camera-shy (or camera-annoyed, whatever you'd like to call it).

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I tend to ramble a little bit, but I try really hard to keep on topic at the very least.

Agent, I'm glad I could make you smile! When I said they're "scattered," I really meant it. One is in a 10G tank on the kitchen counter and the other is in a 5G on a bookshelf. They were tankmates, but one kept bullying the other, so I separated them. And then there are the 3 or so Bettas in decorative vases all over the house too. They're like snakes and potato chips- you can't have just one! :D

Pics to follow soon!

Good to meet ya, Amanda! Let's see your stuff, Bettas and all!

Welcome to the forum!

Great intro! I think you will like it here - we have some wonderful, friendly, and knowledgeable people here!

^^^ You know who THAT is, Amanda!? Be as nervous as I was the first time I got a response from her! ;)

Seriously, I think I said "Are you THE Kathy Love?"

Welcome, welcome Amanda ( even if you are from Texas, lol ...heh heh...I used to live in Austin, loved it...I'd rather be there than here) nice lil zoo too!

And another welcome from me :wavey:
I'm still quite a newbie myself, but in the short time I've been hanging around here, I've learned a LOT ! And still learning... :D
Perfect place for corns here :)

Great intro post. Our house has a huge zoo too. :D

(I promise never to do the following ever again, but I'm going to do it just this once on the forum. No promises on how often I do it when around my reptile friends.)

OMGOMGOMGOMG! THE Kathy Love acknowledged my existence AND welcomed me to the forum! Thank you thank you thank you!

(No more fan-girl type squealing, I promise!)

Forked-- I love Texas, but man, I could never live in Austin! I'm a coastal girl, give me flat roads any day! I do love visiting there and camp in the Hill Country as often as I can.

Also, as promised, pics! If I should refrain from posting further photos in this part of the fourm, let me know and I'll move them to the appropriate one. I'm just unsure of where to post pictures of non-snake critters. :uhoh:

First, this is Silver. She's the be-all, end-all of the critters in my house. An old lady for sure, but you'd never guess from the way she keeps the younger mammals in line. She's been with me for half my life and has been the BEST dog I've ever had... and that's why I still don't mind getting the lint roller out to get the Silver hair off the couch.

Next is Neumann, my box turtle. He was attempting to tackle a typical turtle hurdle (it's a lame joke, but I couldn't leave it out) which involves crossing a quiet country road at precisely the wrong time. My brother saw him take a glancing blow from the wheels of a pick up and brought him to me. We nursed his wounds and decided to build him a safe little habitat (free of roads) where he can live comfortably without much bother from people. His enclosure doubles as a semi-aquatic garden on my large enclosed patio. Good for him, good for me! :D

Last for this post is Sylas (brown tabby) and Sol (blue eyes), my littermate kittens. Sol actually belongs to my boyfriend, but I generally overlook that fact :p. They were born on Friday the 13th in March, which is also my birthday. Super-cute, but super-mischevious!

More later!

Gorgeous animals you have there and I'm sure they are allowed in an introduction post :)

Just for future reference, any non corn pics can go in the General Chit Chat forum at any time and all corn pics can go in the Photo gallery, so I look forward to seeing many more pics of your menagerie :D

Cute photos! Especially the kitties - I am a HUGE kitty fan!

BTW, I believe there is a social group for dog lovers. I don't have a dog, so don't belong to it (waiting for a kitty lover group, haha!). But if you are into dogs, check it out - maybe you will like it.

General Chit Chat is one of the most active sections on the whole forum (I spend most of my online time there - so much variety, and all by corn fans!). So posts there will get a wider audience than this section receives.

Careful Kathy, I think Amanda is a little star struck that you made one post in her intro thread, now she has two replies from you, she may just get a touch of the vapours ;)

See how friendly everyone is here Amanda, you're going to fit right in :D

Haha - funny!

That is what I like about this place - the camaraderie that is shared here. Not just for sharing info, but a feeling of community and sharing laughs sometimes. As long as new people come in with good, friendly attitudes like you have, they usually get along great and have a good time while learning lots of new stuff (not ONLY about corns, either!).

So get busy and start having some fun!!

I just re-arranged my Beardie's viv, so I took some fresh pics...

PANCAKE!!!

She's a super-sweet lizard, very docile and tame. She really seems to enjoy riding on the shoulders of people who will carry her around. We often sit in our garage "living room" with her hanging out with us.

BTW, I custom-built that screen top for her tank (which I believe is a 40G breeder tank). It cost me a little less than $13 to build and didn't take much time to put together. I was quite pleased, as a screentop for a 20G is roughly $20... I didn't want to think about how much one for this tank would cost. :D
