All that is essential is an UTH and a digital thermometer which you can use to test the temp of the substrate, it is pointless sticking the thermometers to the walls cause it won't give you an accurate reading of the tempurature of the floor surface. Sticking to the walls will only give the air temp (or the temp of the glass its stuck to) which isn't what you need to know.

but it really is just the temp of the floor part? with the substrate.,.. right?
 
Sorry the bulb thing is confusing, my guess is this is just a regular light buld. If it were a heat light you would have bought it from a reptile supply store ad it would likely be red or blue.
So go with the UTH as a reg bulb would not give enough heat.
 
Personally my corns tank has a UTH and a overhead lamp. The UTH keeps part of the floor warm while the lamp keeps the air temp up, all temps appropriate. This works good in my house since my house temp is on the cooler side and goes down further at night. I believe it also encourages her to hang out on her branches etc.. Oh and to save little money i only have the analog therms (just like yours) w/o the sticky and i put one therm under the substrate on heated side and one on the cool side to monitor. They work for me plus no extra batteries and wires. just my opinion.

Not exactly, many will say snakes need belly heat, but what about the people who have the heat source along the back of the rack? Like heat cables which run along the back. Many use red lights as a heat source. There are also people who use no heat?
 
I'm not sure why it as to be a digital thermometer either. A probe type would work well, but not essential to the well being of the snake.

Yeah the snake could survive with getting heat that way of course, but in this users case if the UTH is going to be used this will be the way that the snake heats the body up.
 
Heat will transfer into any surface. Doesn't matter whether the heat source comes from Above, below or the side. Its just by having the UTH on the bottom more of the heat from the pad is absorbed straight into the snakes immediate surroundings.
