Infertile eggs?

New member
Hi!

My buttermotley layed 18 eggs yesterday.. First time for her!

The first eggs was layed before I got there (yesterday morning) and she was done yesterday evening (I took the eggs at 23.00).. So they were in the box for quite some time!

When I took the eggs none of them were glued together and that made me nervous! Infertile eggs often don't get glued together..

And an other thing I saw was that the surface of the eggs looked weird..
They didnt have that "smooth" surface, they almost had a "rough" surface.. (hard to explain)

Can anyone help me with this? What do you think?

They look good to me :spinner:, apart from the egg to one side in the first photo, that one doesn't look too good,

They look good to me too. Fertile eggs may have a variety of surface finishes.

You can check for veins in a few days with a small light. Let us know how they do :) The egg in the top row, 2nd from the right may be more prone to mold (on the yellowed portion)

I suspect that 3 eggs (the one that you mentioned are one of them) are in "the red zone".. the are very yellowish..

Thanks for the positive answer, Makes me more hopeful! :)

btw. Is it common for the eggs not to get glued together?
I tought it could be a sign of infertile eggs (since infertile eggs doesnt stick as easy as fertile eggs does)..

There seems to be a variety of reasons why eggs do/don't stick together.

I've noticed clutches that look like yours (with more uneven shells) are less likely to stick together and tend to remain single. In fact I found a clutch exactly like your pics this morning, that were mostly singles with two joined pairs (19 in total by the time I left for work).

It may also depend how long they take to lay. If there's a gap between each one, they dry out and are less likely to stick together.

I think yours will be just fine from those photos.

Nice to hear!
I'll sure be keeping my fingers crossed!

Father is a hot looking butterstripe, would like some babies after these two.. :)

Thanks for your opinions and help!

Also, that "rough" look to them could be what's called snowflaking, which is completely harmless. My girlfriend's theyeri just laid some eggs with snowflaking on them and they looked very similar to your eggs.

Here are mine - 21 by the time I got home. Actually I think they look worse than yours (and the ones over at the right look a bit sweaty for my liking). But my guess is the majority of them will get as far as hatching.

Fingers crossed for both of us!

I've seen the speckled textured look before. I don't think it is a fertility indicator. Even the discoloration I can see in a couple doesn't worry me too much. I think you have a "mostly" good clutch.

Fingers crossed.

I've heard of it but never seen it.. I didnt even think that this could be just that.. Stupid me ;)

Amel het Anery x Snow, so I'll be getting half-and-half visual Amels and Snows. Not as exciting as your Butter Motleys, but they sell well locally.

(And I have a Butter Mot clutch in the cooker as well!)

Here they come!

First one out yesterday, 4 noses peeking out today..

Keeping my fingers crossed for them!
