Info request on Yellow Rat Snakes

breakneck

New member
I have an opportunity to get a 3.5 ft Yellow Rat snake. The owner says it's nippy sometimes and lives in a fake tree in an enclosed screen porch.
I read about them and heard they are known for being nippy and angry and that they do love climbing and are found in trees a lot.

What are your experiences with your yellow rat snakes?
Are they able to be tamed at all or somewhat?
Any stories etc. that you can share to explain how they are.
If you don't have one but know about them feel free to chime in.

I see what you meant with "other threads" :awcrap:

People here are really knowledgeable and willing to help. I'm sure someone who knows about Yellow Rat Snakes will take 5 mins of their time to reply.

This will also work as a bump...

Is yours a WC? Any WC YR I have met has been nippy. But there are CB YRs that are really sweet! Well, Mike had a YR named Mellow Yellow that was a wild snake that turned himself in at Katie and Joe's house, and they gave him to Mike. Mellow Yellow was very tame from the day he surrendered.

Hey, but if it is WC, it's going to have parasites, so $200 to get rid of them, roughly, counting the vet visit, the fecals, the medications...

The more you handle him, the more docile hw will become, that is my experience, even in older snakes, you might have to take a few bites for your cause, but he should calm down.

I appreciate your responses.
The opportunity passed and the guy sold it to a couple traveling through Florida.
It was a wild caught. The guy kept it (he has a snake removal business) for like 2 years in his enclosed porch.

I say go for it!..I looove my yellow rat..and he will chill out if you let him know that you are not going to take his crap..just show no fear if he is pissy, and pick him up and love the crap outta him..They make such great snakes..I dont agree with most peoples ..they are all pissy attitudes towards rats.they will turn out fine if given a chance..;)
hopes this helps..

but I'd look him over and make sure he's healthy first..then get him..lol
ratsnakes just need some TLC..way misunderstood IMO.
I luv 'em:cheers:
hope you get him!!..post pics!

Don't worry about it. The price was nice I thought at $30.
I wanted an arboreal and it was sort of between the yellow rat and a Garden phase tree boa for only $20. I wasn't too keen on the posts and videos I read about them though with giant teeth so I was thinking more on the yellow rat until it went.
The tree boas sold out too so I'm out of luck for now.

Is that a pic of yours in your avatar or is it something else?
Got any posts with the pics of it?

I'm not a myspace member either, (not saying that you would want me as a friend).

Worked.
Very nice yellow and grey!
Yours seems tame. I read they can be kind of nasty and defensive.
Did you have to work with yours to calm it down or did it have a nice disposition from the get go?

he was never held when I got him..the lady was afraid of him..
He was kinda a flighty spazz.
but..He never Musked on me, never Bit me, and never showed any aggression.
weird..But the grey well..
He got me good one night..LOL..He used to give me a hard time..But its not hard working with them..Its easy and doesnt take long.
and by the way..its so worth the effort..
My lester is my Baby, and I love him to bits..If I could only have one..Itd be him.

I'm glad he's like that and it makes me feel better on getting one seeing that he's your top pick.

Let me know if Lester makes baby Lesters as I would be interested in one of his lineage.

I couldn't help myself, I had to tell you about my rat snake. Bonnie is a "greenish" yellow rat snake. She was wild caught, although I'm not sure at what age and like Lester, she had her previous owner terrified of her. When I got her she wasn't used to being handled at all. She never once bit me or even attempted to. She would however go "nuts", it was everything I could do just to hold on to her, and I'm a pretty big guy. She's only about 5.5 foot but she is one strong snake! She only did that about the first four times I held her and now she is one of the tamest snakes I have. I love her to death! She is the most curious snake I have ever seen, always alert and just watching/looking at everyone and everything. About the only time she is in her hide is for about a day after she eats. The rest of the time she is climbing and moving and just being pretty. She even crawls from side to side in her tank when I walk across the room, like she is following me. I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world.
