hay chould some one offer a bit of advice i have a few frends who smoke and is it safe to let them smoke in my bedroom..(were my corn is)

NO! Its just like smoking in the same room with a baby. The smoke emitted out of the cigarette has dangerous chemicals that do mess with the snake's lungs. I suggest you find another place for your friends to smoke. Unless you want to put your snake at risk, your friends can smoke in the same room as a snake. This is what i think, Ima let somone with more experience tell you more about that.

I agree with Abraham. Smoking around any lung breather will have the same effect, ie it is harmful. Personally, I would not allow smoke near my collection. Of course there are many people out there who smoke around their family, friends and pets without thinking twice. Shame on them.

Yeah I agree with those abouve. One of our main concerns as snake owners is URI (upper respiratory infection) I have a feeling that smoking around them would increase the chances of the snake getting sick and developing URI.

I also agree. Snakes are sensitive to smells, chemicals, etc. and I would think smoke would be just as bad.

If I remember correctly corn snakes only have one fully functioning lung, so I would be extra careful with anything that may affect the use of it and that would include smoking, air fresheners, body sprays, household sprays, incense and anything else that may cause an irritation to that lung.

Remember the chemichals from smoking linger on their hands so if they want to even hold your snake when NOT smoking they need to wear gloves. At least I make my smoking friends keep cigarettes outside and gloves on when around my snakes. One keeps asking me to sell him a hatchling and I keep telling him when he quits smoking.

Nice way to make him stop ;)

I wish he would he has emphysema. Also that is my way of being nice. He has had 3 ringneck snakes and 2 garters in the last year, none housed right and all escaped. Luckily they were originally from his yard so. . . yeah, he won't get one from me.

Now, you are trying to get your smoking friends to quit, but honestly, the nasty chemicals wash off with plenty of soap and warm water, so if there is a good reason to skip the gloves, just make them wash really thoroughly!

But also try to make him stop its best for everyone. Even the snakes, and tell the guy why he shouldent keep snakes or any other type of pet. And if he does decide to keep more animals, mostly snakes, teach him about the proper care.

And if he has cats, and smokes around them, tell him that the secondhand smoke is a majro risk factor for common cancers in cats (because that's true -- they don't get lung cancer, but it is known to increase the risk of intestinal lymphoma which is common in cats and almost always fatal).

You can't make somebody stop, they have to WANT to stop. FWIW, I occasionally smoke in my bedroom (where the snakes are housed), and don't always scrub my hands before holding them... not something I'm proud of, but I've never noticed any ill effects. I'll try to be more mindful from now on, though!

I'm a smoker but I have never lit a cigarette in my house. I know smoking is a gross habit, but its hard to quit, but I wouldn't want my house to smell like that! And with so many pets, that's just not something i want to expose them all to.

Good for you for not smoking around your pets or other people! If you have that much self control, you CAN quit.

Okay, I'll be the first (now EX) smoker to admit it. Yep. I smoked in my house. Around my snakes. Sometimes I'd have a cigarette lit and hanging out of my mouth while handling them. Granted, I lived in Denver at the time, and when it was 10*F outside, I was NOT getting my lazy butt off the couch to go outside to smoke. I don't condone or recommend it if it can be at all prevented, but my ex and I both did it. If I could turn back time, I'd have done it differently, which is why I didn't allow smoking in the house once I moved back to Florida.

I added the "try" in there. I know its not as easy as it sounds. Im not saying this from experience, as i am only 16 years old, and i will not want to be taking a risk factor. But from all the stories i have heard that so many people go through so many things to try and stop. So yeah its a good thing that your going to be more mindful from now on. And im not against anyone who smokes (just saying, dont want anything to get started) ;)

i gave up smokeing 3 weeks ago afta about 4 years of smokeing i went from 20-30 roll up to 0 in 1 day it is all in your mind its easy just accept that no smokeing is way better smokeing take everythink and gives nothing back (your paying for somethink that can guve u cancer & give u bad lungs shorterns your life buy like 8 years......we only have say 60-70 years here why whould you trade 8 years for nothing.....

For me, the hardest thing about not smoking is the social aspect. Its really easy for me to go a few days without a cigarette if no one around me is smoking, but as soon as someone else lights up, I have to have one. I have been smoking for almost 9 years, and I'm turning 20 in June. Its such a big part of my life that I need to relearn how to do everything without a cigarette in my hand.

I had a yellow lab who died of lung cancer, and my mom and I used to smoke around her all the time. Even though I know that lung cancer is a secondary cancer in dogs, I still feel really guilty about it, and I try not to smoke around my pets. I have noticed that my snakes are harder to catch and handle when my hands smell like tobacco, so I try very hard to only handle them after washing my hands very carefully. I am determined to quit this summer, I don't need to smoke in my adult life the way I smoked all throughout adolescence. Nicotine gum is my next step, and eventually, hopefully soon, I will be an ex smoker.

The way I see it, not only do you hve to want to quit, but you have to quit retroactively. Yesterday has to be the day, because there is always another tomorrow, or so it seems, and "tomorrow" can stretch on and on until you are lying on your death bed. I've seen it happen to friends and relatives, and I don't want it to happen to me.
