Is she taking a break from Laying Eggs? UPDATE EGGS ARE HERE!

bekers71

What addiction?!
When I got up this morning and checked on my bloodred girl she had laid 3 nice eggs. That was at 7 a.m. I peeked in on her at 12 pm and she had laid 4 more. Now I just noticed she is out of the lay box and roaming around her tank. So I opened up her tote and can see 1 more egg in the lay box. But there is a good size egg about 3/4 inch from her vent and 3 more are very visible a couple inches above that one. These eggs seem to be pretty big to me. They are bigger than any other clutch I have so far. Could there be some thing wrong with her? She's not moving slowly or like she is tired. Just roaming around her tote. Is she taking a break?:shrugs:

Hmmmm...maybe. If you can see a noticeable bulge, then it's likely she might have become egg bound. I would wait until tomorrow morning and don't bother her. I used to have a girl who would stop laying if I peeked in on her, only to continue the next day. So it might be possible that she got "spooked" with you looking at her. But if the egg is still close to the vent and not passed by tomorrow, I'd start trying to massage it out, and make a call to the vet if it doesn't come out, or if you aren't willing to aspirate it.

Thanks. I will do that and see how she is in the morning. The egg is almost to the vent but it seems to be larger than the others were.

must be something wrong in IL

Im having the same issue with all most all my snakes.

I had one female wait 9days after her 1st egg to finish laying her clutch. I would try to just leave her alone for a few days. dont stress her out anymore.

You having trouble too? This is the first one I have had to do this so it is a bit concerning. I called my vet and he said if she didn't lay by tomorrow late morning he would give me a needle to aspirate the egg with. Im keeping my fingers crossed she will pass it on her own.

You're not the only ones having problems, I think we all got girls that didn't read the rule books this year ;)

Keeping my fingers crossed that you have a nice complete clutch in the morning :)

Best wishes,

I dont want to tell you what to do but I would wait. one day is just not long enough b4 you start sticking her.

Good luck!

But things can go bad if it is a bound egg and it isn't dealt with. If 24 hours from now it hasn't passed, and you haven't been able to massage it out, then its time to aspirate the egg. Better to lose a few eggs than an adult female.

Quick update. This morning there were 2 more eggs in the lay box. But she still has one to go. This makes her laying time a bit more than 24 hours. Whew! Poor girl. I am going to give her a couple more hours and then I am aspirating the last egg. She looks tired and I have no trouble losing an egg over risking my snakes health. :)

That's great news! I've had to deal with one female getting egg bound in the last two years (one girl each year), so (unfortunately) I've learned from experience how to deal with and/or how to help prevent dystocia. I feel for ya'. Sounds like she's gonna be O.K.!

Update- The eggs are here! Pics in a few minutes!

Here they are, all 12 eggs and no slugs. For first time mommy I think thats pretty good. After worrying to death, she laid that last egg then went cruising her tank. I fixed her a fresh bowl of water and she stopped for a nice long drink. The one in my hand is the last one laid. Thanks for the support and helpful advice to all of you.

Thanks. I am testing the dad to see if he is a bloodred or at least het blood. He was sold to me last year as a motley and is about 4-5 yrs old. The guy said he was very likely het amel and when I said he looked a lot like a bloodred he said he very well could be. So there was no clear answer. :shrugs: I bred him to an amel motley too just to see if that gene is in there. If he proves out for both then I will be on my way to making my own Fire motleys. *Fingers crossed*

She hasn't even had her pre-lay yet, and I'm going bananas!!
Her name is BRenda, and I have a few pix of her in the photo gallery that I took on Sunday. I have 3 possible blood stripe boys, Kessler, Kato and Kismet. I bred her to Kessler. Kato gets her next year :)
