Is this normal?

Hi Everyone,

I just got a new baby corn snake today and it's been soaking in the cup and leaving its head underwater for like 4 minutes without coming up.

Im curious if I need to be afraid it'll drown or if thats normal.

Thanks so much!

They can hold their breath for quite a while. If you could tell us the set up you have: viv size, temps, substrate, hide boxes, etc. we could give you more info. Does this baby have mites by chance? They will often soak extensively to try to drown the mites.

Hes in a 20 long, substrate is aspen, cool side is 70, warm side 80-85, two hides one on each side, the water dish is on the cool side, after a few hours he went in and starting i guess swimming under water, with his head submerged. I noticed hed lift his head every few minutes, but then he kind of laid down in the water. Honestly, I got nervous and yanked him out after not seeing him poke his head up anymore.

And Im not sure about mites, how do I check for that?

Thanks for your response

Look for small black specks like pepper at the bottom of the water bowl. Also look for those same black specks under his scales, especially on the head, under the chin and around the eyes. You may see them moving.

It's possible he may just be getting ready to shed. Some snakes will soak to help loosen the old skin.

I would check for mites first, then let him be for a few days and allow him to settle in. He may think the waterdish is the safest place to hide right. They're not the smartest animals, lol.

Uh oh. There was about 4 pepper like specs in the water bowl. Snake is yellow, for the life of me I dont see any on him.

Now what do I do? Do I treat him with something, hes only 4 months.

I have a piece of branch in the viv with him......right next to his bowl. I soaked the snake and am soaking the branch. Branch is the from the other part of a tree, I just noticed something.... when i run my hand over the branch, i have the same specs/flecs on my hands as were in the water.

Now im wondering if its not mites.....he just went right from the wood into the water.

Mites have legs that you can see right? These things are more like flat specs of wood.
