Well as most of you know I am on my second corn snake, well i was.. I woke up this morning to see my snake laying lifeless in the viv :(.. I got it from the same pet store "petsmart". I got the 14 day guarntee on him, i just need to bring the contract and the body. Where is the best place to find a breeder? IM going up there after work and going off.. They all have mites. I just got mine mite free and now this. I didnt over do the mite treatment either.

IM just very upset that they can sell these pets knowing they are ill.. I believe this was due to a respatory infection as well.. Im just so upset and angry.. I feel like i want to get another one but not from any pet store again.

He was never stressed out to me he always hung out in his plants and he would drink fresh water each day, use both the warm hide and the cool hide, even got a humid hide for it to help shed which i seen em in there.

I know I cant be the blame for this since i took as best care of it as i can, but i keep beating myself up over it.

I'm so sorry! Don't beat yourself up over it. More than likely it's something off with the husbandry of the pet store if the first one came from there as well. Give 'em a piece of your mind and get your money back. Then steer clear from their store. As for breeders, I know there are quite a bit of members here from Ohio. Personally, we got our 08s from Kyle at Buckeye River Reptiles. But he's up here in NE Ohio by me.

Thank you, I plan on going up there after work and point out all the faults with their set up. I swear they had mites and everything. The sad part is I dont think my girlfriend will let me get another one :( I told her ive done everything by the book on my end to make sure it was taken care of properly. Ill do some google searches for breeders, thanks again.

Forget to mention to try fauna classifieds as well! Tons and tons of breeders there. Also check the BOI there before going with a breeder you don't know of. Good luck and I'm sure your girlfriend will understand you wanting another one. It wasn't your fault after all.

Hey Jeremey... I'm so sorry to hear that your second snake died as well. My best advice would be to get your money back and not buy anymore snakes from PetSmart, but that seems to be what you've got in mind.

There are a LOT of breeders that are members of the forums here. Find someone, MinLynn suggested Kyle of Buckeye River Reptiles, and see if they know of any shows that will be taking place in your area. Go to a show and buy from a reputable breeder there. Or, have somebody ship you a snake, it will cost a little extra, but at least it's from a breeder. :)

Also check the Cornsnake Registry and search for breeders there.

Good luck! Don't let a crappy pet store ruin your interest in snakes! :)

Thanks for the advice. ill check that site out. Ive been fasinated with snakes since i was a lil tot. I think i just got bad luck, but if i can go up there and save lives then im going to try. to.. I think the problem with their corns is that they are all housed together, I think thats the classic way of sharing diseases and what not.

Thanks again everyone.

If you do buy from a member on the forum, you have a large and great selection of breeders..I bought a snake off Carol and love her to bits! A baby miami..she came by mail healthy and was a great eater right from the start..Going with a breeder is definitely the best choice in the long run.. :)

I'm sorry to hear about your snake passing. I'm sure you did everything you could to give it a good life..Snakes from pet stores just seem to always have some underlying problem..(I'm counting myself to be extremely fortunate as my first corn Maize came from a petsmart and was in great health)..I'm not saying this is always the case..but sadly it does happen :(

Des is right... Carol is an awesome breeder, so is Brent of Dakota Corns, and Jeff Mohr of Mohr Snakes. Those are all of the people I've purchased snakes from and recommendly very highly. :D

Thanks for the recomendations, ill check the forsale section and keep my eyes posted out for the members you've listed. I feel bad for my kids cause they LOVED the snake. My 3 year old would just sit there at watch em. He even went with me to pick em out... My son told me to go with the Cali. King haha.

yep threw out all the substrate.. soaked and cleaned all hides, cleaned out the viv with dish soap, rinsed everything out let all hides/plants air dry. Then i placed in new aspen bedding. Attempted to feed but he was in blue and did not eat, so i just figured it was the shed, started to have a bad shed. next thing i know hes not moving..

I know you want to try and save the little corns but really you're just reinforcing the bad husbandry by giving them money for doing it. Baby snakes housed together is the first sign that they're husbandry is way off. Not only does it spread disease like you said, but baby corns are known to become cannilbalistic as well. Not only that but if one corn is sick, how do you know which one? They wouldn't and they obviously wouldn't care because people are giving them money NOT to care. It was always hard for me NOT to buy from some of those large chain stores because I wanted to "save" them. In the end though, I just decided to start shopping in some of the more locally owned pet stores that do have good husbandry practices.

Well said, MinLynn...

Petstores are so unpredictable... so uncertain. You can never really know where an animal has come from, did it come to the petstore sick? Did it come from somebody who ended up with a surprise clutch and had no idea what they're doing? Do they have a feeding garauntee? I'd rather pay a little more to have a snake shipped to me than get one cheaper locally that isn't healthy. Dunno if that makes any sense, but there ya go... :shrugs:

I wanna go up there and give them a piece of my mind.. but i know that wont do anything... Yeah ive checked Carols page out and shes got some beautiful critters :)

Oh yes she does! :D

At the very least, Jermey, go up there and get your money back or get a credit for the store. They do have good pet supplies, like toys, dishes, etc. But if you can get cash back, do so... take your money elsewhere for any supplies you need. I've not shopped at PetSmart for some time, I've never been fond of them. The PetCo in my area is a LOT better.

I think the only time ill be going to petsmart is for my puppy...
I have my GF looking for the contract now.. I need that before i can get the money back. They atleast give you 2 weeks and you have to bring a body. So i saved all that i just gotta remember where the contract is.

Aww your PetSmart sells puppies... mine doesn't. I still prefer buying from breeders. I'm weird like that. :p ;)

Good luck finding that contract! :)

Ah no they dont but i meant for his toys and and vet is in there lol... I actually found a breeder for my pup.. well the woman did. If only she liked snakes.. I have a few ideas where i put it. i made sure i didnt get screwed over like last time.. well the first one waited untill the 2 weeks was up, almost like they are programmed.

If petsmart did sell puppies they would all have worms or something.
