It's A girl, Child number 18

Personally, this is not some thing I would do. Between me and my husband we have 7 kids, and some times they drive me nuts. But I don't know...what's wrong with what they are doing? Is it not a right to do with your body the what you want? They are a married couple and have been for I believe 24 yrs. These people do not live on the system. If I'm not mistaken, they have their own church in their home. They own and run a real estate company, have no bills, pay every thing off when they buy it and if they can't afford it they don't buy it. They built a 7000 sq foot home for their selves by them selves. The mother home schools her children, and statistics show that children that are home schooled generally score higher than those children in public school systems. They are all taught to share and be nice to each other. My kids have manners, but those kids put mine to shame. How many of us come from parents that have 10+ siblings? Do you think they received a bunch of 1 on 1 time or quality time with each parent? No. But I would have to say it seems as though most those kids turned out to be pretty good people. To be honest, if more people raised their kids like these people do, it might be a nicer world to live in. Maybe there would also be less "kids" having unwanted babies. Maybe they are on to some thing. :shrugs:

Minus the 18 kids, I don't know any one that wouldn't love to own a big home, no payments and be debt free. Just my .02 worth. :)

I don't expect anybody else to see it the way I do... I have kind of radical views on the worlds' overpopulation issue.
Maybe it's their right and their choice, but I do think it's wrong. I feel, just because you CAN have kids does not mean that you SHOULD. It was not my intent to offend any moms here and if I have I apologize, but I do feel strongly that the last thing this planet needs is more people. Back when people farmed their food and needed kids to help them work the land it made sense to have a huge family, but now that there are too many people, it doesn't. And I know corns are not people, but I can't help but see a parallel with another thread on here. I might choose to cut back and breed fewer corns because I think the market is flooded, while someone else may still choose to get eggs from every breedable female they can, because that is their choice and their right and it's their snakes! Never mind the fact that it might be more responsible of them if they chose not to breed so many.

Jen, just so you know, I never take offense to what you say. :) I feel as though every one has valuable opinions/points to offer. Matter of fact, I agree with you on the population aspect and the fact that people shouldn't have kids just because they can. I just feel like cases such as this family, it would be nice if more people were like them. I mean that in the way of how they raise their kids and treat each other. Not running out and sleeping with who ever-when ever, having kids they don't want, letting any one else raise them, live off the state, not teaching any respect, kindness or manners so on and so forth. You know?

Well no bills (that would be heaven) and cash all the way, I think enough is enough. Saying that what people do in thier own home is thier business. No church (if you are thinking of a famous church that promotes big families and is based in Utah) supports this family. They meet with other like minded people in a someones home for worship and shring of ideas. They also home school and go to a home school conferance once a year.
Sure having the 7000 sq ft house furnished and decorated for them was a plus, trip to Disneyland and New York.
I feel the more responsible thing would be to adopt and help children and families less fortunate then they.
I also feel in the near future we are all going to know what it means to help our neighbor. What I never see on the Duggers is charity to others. I guess I am a bigger fan of Jon and Kate, who at least give back when they can and understand it is thier particular situation has made them famous.

Just my personal opinion...

As someone who is adopted, I have to say I agree with those of you who spoke about adoption. There are plenty of children in this country and the world who are without a family, and who would make a wonderful addition to ANY family.

That being said, I personally plan to NEVER give birth, and only adopt. I do not see the point of giving birth when you can help someone else find a home. Of course this isn't my only reason for not giving birth, but its important to me personally.
However this point of view has ruined many potential relationships, as most men that I know want to have "their own" child. I know many women who share a similar view to my own, but gave in and didn't adopt because the man they loved refused to adopt for one reason or another. I even had one of my friends husbands (who didn't know I was adopted) tell me that its impossible to love a child that wasn't your own and that there was ALWAYS, with no exceptions, something wrong with an adopted child. I asked him how he had come to this conclusion and he had no reason for it - no family members were adopted no friends, he just developed these ideas on his own. Of course when I said I was adopted I think he was more than a little embarrassed... :blowhead:

Now, even if you don't want to adopt for whatever reason, you should some to some reasonable limit on the number of children your going to have... 18 is just too many.

I look around our area and see all the trees being replaced with houses, shopping, parking. We need more and more of these things because we have more and more people. I realize we can't, or won't impose limits on people's right to overbreed, shouldn't people see that we are already overtaxing the environment we must live in and think about limiting themselves?
These TWO people have added 18 new people to this world, when they die they have increased the population by 16, if they stop now.
They look so proud of that in the picture. Kudos Duggars, thank you very much, we'll name a parking lot after you.

It kind of scares me how they all look and dress the same...

It's like Stepford Wives. :uhoh:

18 seems like too many to me, but they seem to be taking care of things. I am a firm believer that what two consenting adults do is their business and none of mine, so long as it does not endanger the life of another being.

I will echo the adoption sentiments. Even when I was living the straight life I wanted to adopt instead of having my own child. The very thought of carrying a child is disconcerting to me. Being a teacher, I have seen the impact I can have on a child, having spent 45 minutes a day with them for 180 days... I can't imagine the impact, both present and future, that adopting a child can have on the world.

We don't need more people on this planet... but we do need more good, responsible people raising children to become good, responsible people.

Incidentally, I always ask people who are pro-life how many children they have adopted. I have yet to run across any that have done so..... :(

I couldn't agree more. No one seems to acknowledge that over population is an issue. Humans are the superior race so we should create as many as possible... At some point religion and reason need to meet.

Although I respect those who have religious beliefs, my own thought concerning the birth control issue is that God created all things, and there are many naturally occuring plants which act as a birth control when taken in a certain way. If God didn't want you to have the option, he wouldn't have made those. All ancient societies had some way of preventing or aborting an unwanted pregnancy.
