Jungle corns

I took in a coral baby that. Was going to be culled if i didnt take her because she wont eat.....so im working with her and love the challenge.....i had a corn X striped cali king she was great but she got out.

What do you expect happens to your "waste?" Do you kill every unsold baby yourself? QUOTE]

That is funny Chip I am looking through this thread and I cant find anywhere that its says any of the unsold babies are to be killed. Is it that hard to think that maybe they could be kept as PETS??? Quote where it says that they are to be killed and I will forget that I ever questioned you.

If you don't euthanize them, then they stand a good chance of getting into the gene pool(s). Is it "hard to think that they might be sold as pets?" Not at all, what a wonderful solution that would be. But just like corns with one eye, kinks, and other deformities -I have seen them bred and sold undisclosed over and over and over. If you want links, I am sure I can find them.

Actually I said "kept as pets" not "sold" meaning that if no one buys them just keep them for yourself until somebody does then breed some more when you run out. Its not like I am going to try and make a business off of selling jungle corns it would just be a hobby/fun experiment.

Sterling you seem to think like I do. I breed a corn now and then just for a hobby. If I can't find a super good home with people I know then I don't mind at all to keep them myself until the right home comes up. As for hybrids, I'm not sure if my female is a creamsicle or not but I think all the stigma against them is just unfair for lack of a better word.

Yea but I dont like the idea of feeding snakes to snakes when a mouse is good enough, I would rather keep my unwanted snakes rather than kill them.
Nice thought, but what if you get a good-sized clutch, say 25 eggs, 20 hatch and thrive and you can only sell 5? So you can house the 15 babies in a little shoebox rack and bulk buy 100 pinks, no trouble at all. Next month, still no sales, more pinkies ordered, next month the same, and so on. When you are looking at buying fluffs, small adults and housing for those 15 as yearlings and onwards, how does that sound? Fast forward a couple of years and you have an adult rack full of snakes you never sold that can live for 20 years or more.

Eh, I don't think it is that Chip dislikes hybrids (But i do believe I read somewhere he isnt fond of them) Its that he is simply telling the truth and being blunt about it.

Hey I was doing some reading up on whether I could cross my cali king snake with a female corn one day and I was told that it is possible and that they make babies called Jungle Corns. Is this true? if so I would guess it would be pretty dangerous to put a corn with a king. Also if it is possible what kind of market value do they have? Thanks.

Sterling.

Hey there, I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I know you're very new to snakes in general, so I really, really don't think that thinking about breeding hybrids should be even on your mind right now.

It is controversial (as you can see!), and downright dangerous. My suggestion would be to start off with a pair of lovely corn snakes first and see how that goes, maybe when you have more experience you could think about doing hybrids.

When I first got into snakes, I, too thought the hybrids were really cool looking. Now that I've been doing it, I STILL wouldn't even try my hand at breeding hybrids. Not worth the risk (to me) and I would feel absolutely awful if one of my pets got eaten for my own desires of making a hybrid.

Seriously, corn snakes are SO Much fun to breed, there isn't really much reason to get into hybrids!

(Please keep in mind this is just my opinion!)

I wont ever tell anyone what they should or shouldn't breed. But as a "breeder" you have a responsibility to the community that keeps and buys snakes. I like jungle corns, but quite possibly one of the most exciting morphs than we've seen in awhile could (technically) be one. Not only does that hurt someones feelings it affects peoples business. I produce (my opinion) frosted creams, via the TS line. I don't know for sure they are or aren't 100% corn, but I repeat my opinion to anyone who gets one from me til I'm blue in the face. What percentage they are really doesn't matter, it's a suspect line.

To Sterling do your homework and learn the history. Find some hybrid forums and read up on it if you are really interested. There are some beautiful crosses out there, but to just throw snakes together after only skimming the subject matter would be irresponsible as well as less gratifying :)

And then there are those that love hybrids. Look into what you like and then do it responsibly.
My favorite hybrids....

Hybrids are for those that want something that is truly unique and spectacular. They are for those that want to create beauty with a larger mixing of phenotypes. Hybrids are for those that simply don't want to be limited by what others are afraid of. I agree though, read up on the various hybrids out there and then, perhaps buy some hybrids from someone else first once you decide what you like. Why recreate the wheel when someone else has already done it for you? I'm still researching hybrids and trying to decide which ones I need to have and which hybrids I just think are cool looking myself so I'm a newbie to this forum as well, but I like the way you think.
