Just got a 2yo corn, need some advice.

He should be able to eat anything within 1.5 x the widest part of his body. Rats do contain more fat tough. They are considere to be unhealthy to feed regularly, but since you bought some already, feeding one once in a while is ok. Maybe after feeding a rat take some extra days to feed again.

The rats were the largest I could find. The adult mice were still pretty small.

I have 4 small rats so with what you're saying they should last more than a month if I'm going to feed him at intervals a bit longer than a week?

What does normal snake stool look like? I ask because this most recent poop looks like just that, a pile of digested food.

Previously his tank had multiple piles of poo, mostly in one spot, but they looked more like a deflated mouse remains. More like a little grey sausage casing or something.

So which is normal?

Yeah, you're right, more then a month :)

Snake poo looks like bird poo colorwise, only less 'fluid'. So not like deflated grey sausage or a pile of digested food, 'healthy' snake poo does not show what was eaten. I have found that ill snakes produce more smelly poo then usual, during medication their stools might not smell at all after a few days.

If your temps are ok and the poo still looks weird, there is probably something causing your snake to not digest properly. If you have it available, dust his next two prays with Nutribac and see if his poo starts to look more normal. It won't hurt to start this right away, even before your temps are regulated perfectly. The gut environment of your snake could use some support if the temps are not appropriate anyway.

Well here it is. I wouldn't say it smells too bad but I can't notice it if I stick my head in there take a good haul lol

I guess it does resemble bird poop, and the temps in viv have been pretty stable around 80.

One thing that's been on my mind since it was brought up is the reference to neurological damage due to high heat. I don't think anything is wrong with him but I've been curious how long they could sustain a period of high temp before harm comes to them?

First off, welcome!

Yup, that is normal poop.

Get him a water dish he can hide under. Wal-mart has some for around a buck right now.

Adult snakes eat adult mice, usually, no matter how big the snake gets. On rats, he might gain too much weight... but he might not.
Plus, corns really love rats.
You will hear from people who feed rats exclusively, and people who feed mice exclusively.

Make sure the very hottest it gets anywhere in the tank is 85 degrees. Believe me, you will be heartbroken when your snake burrows and burns himself. Burns are ugly and painful and expensive to treat. A corn will not move when he starts to burn.

Corns don't need to be that warm, generally. It doesn't matter if he never burrows. My corns are usually on their cool sides and are cool to the touch.
In fact, since it is summer, your corn doesn't really NEED a heat pad, except maybe to digest.
It is much safer for it to be too cool than it to be too warm.

Congrats on your gorgeous baby.

Oh... signs of neurological damage would be if you can flip him on his back and he doesn't self-correct quickly, or you see him moving like a drunken snake.

No it was his previous poos that didn't look like this. Before I got him. Those ones did look like deflated sausage.

Glad to see he is all good. Makes me feel better.

So I just had him out a bit he was hanging out on me, exploring the floor a bit and I thought I'd throw down my measuring stick and measure him. He's at least 4 feet long, because the meter stick only goes to 36" and he had at least 1 foot left to measure.

Now if I had a scale I'd weigh him.

What do I do with a thawed rat he doesn't want to eat? I think he was too scared. I couldn't entice him out so lifted his rock and he did bite the rat held on for a few secs and let go trying to hide.

I left the rat now sitting on top of his rock but can't leave it there for long.

There's not much you can do with it really. Unless you have another hungry mouth to feed it to (by which I mean another snakey of course. No munching it yourself or feeding it to the kiddies for dinner lol :p sorry I have an odd sense of humour). If it's thawed out & not eaten you should throw it away. I wouldn't recommend re freezing it.

He ate it. Did it when we went out. I left it on top of fake plants so it wasn't on the bedding. I just hope he didn't eat any bedding.

Guess your guy just doesn't like to be watched while he eats. Some of them are weird like that. Just got to turn out the lights and leave em alone for a while.

As for what to do if he doesn't eat it. Depending on how long it's been out I do refreeze. I have a kingsnake that is weird about eating and sometimes he wont. So, I refreeze the mouse and try again the next day. If he doesn't eat it the next day then I just throw the mouse away. But I wouldn't refreeze if the mouse has been out for several hours.

Forgot to mention that when you throw the mouse or rat away, to put it in a sealed plastic baggie or something. They decompose pretty fast and will stink if you don't lol.

He's ok being watched I've fed him before and watched but I've made some changes in his tank and he didn't want to come out from under his rock so I lifted the rock and dangled the mouse around.

I think I just freaked him out a bit and he didn't want to eat until it was all calm. I was actually going to remove it when I noticed it wasn't there anymore.
