I've only had my snake since the 5th of April so 5 days and over the past 2 days he has been sitting in his hide on the cool side without coming out (as far as I can tell)

Is this something i should be worried about?

Tomorrow is his 1st feeding with me so I'm going to have to take him out and put him in his feeder cage.

But I'm just sort of wondering if this is normal for them to do this or what? Thanks in advance.

I've had my 2 for over a year now and they still do this! Nothing to worry about, they will come out and seek heat when they want! Got any pics?

Nothing to worry about it is quite normal, mine are exactly the same. They are more active at night though. They will probably be more active as they get older and more settled in, it really is early days give them time.

Kindest regards

Habistatman.

Amels are so cool! I got 1 and also a Carolina Corn! I always put mine back in thier enclosure straight after feeding as they can settle down and relax in thier own surroundings without me stressing them out later by moving them!

Well, succesful 1st feeding. I got a video of it but I dont know how to upload it to here. Can anyone help me?

yeah for some reason the embedding didnt work so i gave up, posted the youtube link up a couple posts.

alright i bought the probe thermometer and put it under the substrate and waited about 5-10 mins and looked at the temp... i immidiatly unplugged the UTH and aplogized to my little baby. It was creeping over 95 degrees F. I feel so bad. But that temp would explain why he was 'chilling' over on the cool side of the viv.

Ok so now the ultimate question is how can i regulate that UTH better? I have read about rheostats and timers and stuff but i dont know what to get.

I currently have a christmas light timer that can turn the UTH on and off at hour intervals expample turn on at 8am shut off at noon turn back on at 3pm and off at whatever time. Would that be a good solution??

Please help I do not want to injure my snake in any way. (it already falls of the fake plant thing enough)

Well lets start off with the basics. The first thing you need to do is consider your money situation. If you can afford to, a thermostat is by far the better option. If money is a concern, then a simple lamp dimmer is your best option.

Here is a lamp dimmer which you would plug into the wall and plug the UTH into (I like this one, it has a night light!). Then you simply adjust the dimmer until the UTH functions at the temps you want. Notice that this method will require adjustment as room temperatures change.

Your thermostat options are boundless. Some are cheaper, such as the Zilla Temperature Controller (500w) and some can get rather expensive.

I can tell you that you want a digital thermostat, which the Zilla isn't, but once you get it set to the right temp your good to go. I currently deploy two of these Zilla TStats and my only complaint is the fact that they need set about 3-5 degrees higher to reach the temps I want (temp gun used to determine actual temps). That and they can be a little bit noisy when switching the UTH on and off, but you get used to it.

At the very least, get a dimmer like what I showed you and do away with a timer, they simply wont fit the bill.

awesome thank you, i will take a look thru some stores in town here and hopefully find something. If not i will just order off line. Thanks again you are a great help

I would go with a thermostat if you can. Less headaches.

In the meantime, put something between the UTH and the tank. A ceramic tile works best, but I've also used a plate or a towel.

No heat is better than cooking your snake, so if you can't get it down below 85° turning the UTH off until you get a thermostat or dimmer is fine.

Went out and bought the dimmer today after school, got it all hooked up now just trying to find the right spot. I also went to the pet store where i bought the UTH and was talking with the manager/supervisor person of the reptiles and fish and told her that the probe thermometer was reading about 105 degrees peak temp and she just looked at me and said that something was wrong with either the UTH or the thermometer, I showed her the thermometer that i got from there and she said she has never had any troubles with hers so she thinks it is the UTH is buggy and should not be getting that hot. She told me to return it and buy a new one. Got the new one all hooked up and am now monitoring it with the thermometer and the dimmer attempting to get the right setting.
