ok, will it still work if I just dont take off the the sticker that reveals the adheasive crap and just set it under the tank?

Yes, that works just fine. I have several tanks set up with the UTH duct taped to the bottom of the tank. Don't worry, they don't get hot enough to catch the paper on fire, especially when using a thermostat. If they did, you'd be cooking your snake!

yea, i want to say that paper catches fire at 451* F

Ok, I have one more question. My friend and I have had our first corn for about a month and it has yet to shed. We are sure it has grown. We measured it a couple times ;) But anyway, is there a regular interval at which they shed? I have read in my book about shedding and it didnt really mention anything in relation to intervals between sheds. The snake has been eating great every week and is definately growing. We were just wondering. Also, do snow corn's eyes turn blue as well? I just wondered because its eyes seem to be a little bit of a different color than other snakes. Oh, and it gave us our first scare today. We have been using turf for substrate and it actually goes nicely. We have a couple pieces and we change them and wash them a lot. Well, I asked my friend to go get the snake from its cage. Well, she came out yelling that it was gone. Now, this is unlikey. The lid is weighted down so I figured she didnt look very hard for the snake. We checked the hides and then I remembered reading somethings about snakes liking to burrow sometimes so we checked under the turf and there it was. It appeared to be fine. Felt a little cold, though. You guys reckon it will be okay? I think we will be switching that tank over to Aspen soon. Thanks for all the help! Next snake comes home soon! :crazy02:

he might be trying to get away from the heat lamp(if its still in use). He'd prolly rather be a little cold than dried out, especially if he's getting ready to shed. When the eyes go blue you may want to mist him or wet him somehow to help th skin to come off(a couple days later). Search on shedding, there are many ways to give them help.

Your corn will go to which ever side it feels comfortable at (warm or cold). So I wouldn't worry about that too much. My corns often feel cold because they prefer not warmer than 85F, and your body temp is 98F. A snow's eyes will change, but it isn't as noticeable at first when you don't know what you are looking for.

A young corn will shed about once a month. Don't worry, yours will shed when it's due. Is your humidity at an appropriate level? You will have no problems with the shed if your level are at about 40-50%.

Uh, I dont have any sort of humidity gauge, but I think it's alright. also, I have a thermometer (not a digital one, I found it at the pet stoe, it says for reptiles, it's on the hot side) and it is reading mid 80's. The heat lamp isnt too strong at all. Like 25 watts or so. But again, thanks for the help! I think it will be shedding rather soon!

Most corns do will in ambient humidity. However, if yours begins shedding in pieces, mist it a couple of times a day when it is in shed, or put some moist paper towels or moss in a hide for it. I seldom do either for my corns, and they usually have perfect sheds anyway.

Ok, well I am off today to get the next snake. I was going to attent the Midwest Reptile Show but that conflicts with an orchestra that I am involved with. I figured I can always go next month. ;) Anywho. So, I thought I would make some final clarifications. So, I CAN leave the sticker backing on the UTH and just set it on the table, and the the tank on the pad? Hope so. I really dont want to adhere it to my tank. And will the UTH work until I can get money for a thermostat. I figure if it gets too hot, the snake will move. ok well thanks for everybodys help! I will actually be going to quite a few stores out of my area just seeing what everybody has! Thanks again!

If you aren't going to regulate the UTH at first, I would also check the temps of the cool side. If the UTH gets to 110F in an hour, your cool side won't stay in the 70-75F range. Sure, the snake may move, but will the other side be too hot as well? I'd say that you should rig up a rheostat or get a thermostat first. If not, you will be unplugging the UTH to cool it down, and then plugging it back in again in an attempt to have the proper heat temps. That would cause a lot of fluctuations in the tank.

well, the thing is, I dont have a lot of money to be spending. I know it sounds a bit rediculous but I really dont have the couple dollars extra to make a rheostat at the moment. On top of that, I would probably find a way to screw it up. Grr. Ok, well I read something on the UTH I think I am getting and it said something about it warming 5-10 degres. My house is usually 70 and my room is actually probably 73. (I leave my door shut and my bed is right over the vent, so it does get as much air). So, wouldn't that work? I have every intention to get a thermostat as well, I just cant afford it at the moment. I think I have just enough for the snake and the UTH and the screen lid. I got everything else a couple days ago. Ok, well I am actually getting ready to go shopping right now. So, I will report more when I get back. Thanks for all the answers to my sometimes not-so-intelligent questions. ;)

A lamp dimmer from Wal-mart only costs about $9. If you can't afford that much to ensure your snake's safety, I'd suggest you wait to get the snake until you can.

One of my UTH's said something about warming to 10 degrees above room temp, but when I put my thermometer probe on the glass under the substrate, it read 130'.

Personally, I wouldn't get the snake until I could have everything it needs to be safe and healthy. Yes, you may have to wait a few more months, but that is better than an injured snake.

I agree 100% with BeckyG. I made a rheostat dimmer-thingy (a very scientific phrase, I know) for less than $10 using directions from a thread on this forum. The UTH will get way too hot; not just 5-10 degrees above room temp. I, too, tested mine out before sticking it on the tank.

If you don't have the $ now, it is worth the wait, believe me (and I have also "been there" and only had $5 to my name). Why skimp on the ten dollars now, and have to replace your snake later. Honestly, wait the few weeks or month it takes to get funds again. Use the money you would purchase the snake with to buy the required material and get your viv set up and running. You can work out the "kinks" in the temps before the snake arrives, and you will be happier for it in the long run. It's better not to rush into things...all of us here know how exciting it is to get your first snake....and second, and third....well, you get the picture.

"Haste makes waste."

Good luck.

Ok, well I got my snake earlier. I put the UTH under the tank and it's great. It has been on since about two o'clock and it isnt really all that hot. I expected MUCH more of a change. But, yeah I will be getting a thermostat soon hopefully. I know that I should have one now but really after what I saw today at the petstore, I think anything is better. They had two dead snakes and didnt realize it until I told them. It stunk, to saw the least. And then, I wanted to hold a couple before I made my decision, and one guy literally tried to jump from my hands. I put him back. I got it down to two, and finally had to decide. I really appreciate everyones help and sorry that I'm not following the advice exactly, but hopefully it'll work out. I felt bad for those snakes. And the girl that was assisting me (I had to demand for her to come and help me after waiting about 45 minutes) was too afraid to even get them out of the cage. So, that's when I noticed the dead snakes. I think mine will be fine, honestly. He is active. He moves around and explores, but it's still kind of shy. I love its personality, though. I think it's female, but once again, I'm unsure. They also jipped on the price. The sign clearly says albino corns are $50 and the rest are $40. A bit pricey for my tastes, but oh well. No correct me if I am wrong but I dont think snows are albino, nor do I think the snake I got is either. I will attach a pictue. Again, correct me if I am wrong. The other lady that cashed me out also agreed with me. Oh well. But thanks again, and I dont want to offend anybody because I already got it. I will really try and watch the UTH and make sure it isnt too hot as much as I can. So, here is my newest snake. Un-named. My friends all like Jellybean. lol. Who knows. Also, can I get a more definate answer on the morph? OH! One last thing. While I was out, my parents took the liberty of adhereing the UTH to the tank. I told them not to. Oh well, I guess. It had two sticks. One that was clear and one that was white. Both sides were slightly sticky, but the white side much more than the other. Is it okay that they did that? The white side is up stuck to the bottom of the tank, while the other is down. We removed both stickers. Again, thanks for everyone's help! I REALLY appreciate it all!

Yes, snows are albinos. You could call them a "double-albino" if it helps you understand; they are lacking both the red melanin and the black melanin.

Your snake is an amel (an "albino")...it is lacking black melanin. There are also anery snakes (an "albino") that is like your snake, but black instead of red.....it is lacking the red melanin.

Now that your parents have stuck the UTH to your tank, you must be VERY diligent on checking your temps. Check the substrate temp on both the cool side and warm side with a proper probe thermometer. I'd bet it gets too hot quite soon.

Get that thermostat as soon as possible. Ask your parents/friends/grandparents/the pope for some cash to borrow. In my opinion, regulating your heat is just as important as buying food. If you don't have either, your snake will die....it just might take awhile.
