Love vs practicality corn style

I don't think it's just Kathy's snakes that start addiction! The one at my local pet store is very cute, I'm not sure of the colors but he's whitish and orangeish - amel? Either way he's a cutie pie.

Ginger??!!??

Nanci :)

Actually, I managed with just my single Love Hypo, Kieran, for about 5 yrs.... until I found this place.... and now, I have six... and only two might be a suitable breeding pair... except I just plain love my grey snakes and most people prefer those washed out ones or them bright ones things :)

I love the greys too! ;D

Be very careful looking over the snake at the pet store if you intend to buy him/her. I got my second corn from a pet shop bur because the employee was close to me and wouldn't leave me alone, I didn't even notice the suck shed on the tip of her tail until after I got home. Soaked her and noticed the tail was hating on by a thread. It soon fell off. It doesn't affect her health. But $60 for a hypo with a missing tail is just a rip off. Don't get me wrong I love her and think she is much better off now. Just really mad I didn't notice in store and bring to their attention.

Love vs Practicality update

Ok call me a complete sap. It's ok I admit it. lol I listened to every word you guys said. Cmalchow, thank you so much for your kind words and advice. I definitely want to see your snakes. However, after much ado about nothing I found myself back at Petco holding my little friend and thinking of a million reasons to walk away. My daughter finely said, "Mom why are you stressing out over this? If you want the damn snake then get it." Geez out of the mouths of 20yr old smart asses. lmao Anyway, that's the truth of it. I know buying from a breeder was a smarter thing to do but Frank (that's what I named him.) stole my heart on that first day and seeing him again... well let's just say there was no way I was leaving him behind.

That said, I want you guys to know that Petco is no longer going to have my business. Four people rushed to help me that day, one being a manager, and all four were terrified of the snakes. I couldn't believe none of them would reach in and pick up my little guy. I asked if I could get him out myself but was told no that the store was liable if I got bit. hahahahaha we're talking hatchlings the size of a long pencil. I laughed it off until one of the staff reached in with a ball point pen and began poking at Frank. I know she was trying to pick him up but I don't handle these things very well so I threatened to call their corporate office and the manager allowed me to pick him up myself. Needless to say all rational thought went out the window and Frank came home with me.

It cost me $40 to rescue Frank but Petco lost out when I spent close to $400 on cage and equipment at Petsmart. Anyway, Frank now lives in the lap of luxury and will never have to endure ignorance again. :p

"Frank" huh? GREAT name!! Corngrats!! :)

congratulations on your little guy. I completely understand your situation...I have 3 corns, all purchaced over a one month period and they have all been "from the heart" purchaces. My first...was my son's choice at a expo from a breeder who kinda played us. Labled him an okeete, but he's not. We didn't know better. He is the brightest normal I've ever seen and he has an amazing personality (what snake likes to play legos??). The other 2 were from this site and for no reason other than how lovely they were and had such bright "friendly" eyes. All are wonderful....none done with the "right" research". However Frank got his start....he will be a treasured member of your family.

Thank you for the support. I could totally get addicted to corns but I live in a condo and don't have a lot of room. Therefore Frank is it for now.... ok I might get one more at the expo. hehe If I could get my daughter to move out I could turn her room into a reptile palace. lmao

Congratulations! I understand - sometimes a particular animal just calls to you, lol!

But I am glad you didn't buy $400 worth of reptile stuff at a place where they are terrified of snakes! Not sure what you could spend $400 on for a baby corn, but as long as you are happy, all is good! However, I think you might regret buying some of the "stuff" at a pet shop when you go to the expo in a couple of weeks and see the variety offered - and the prices. I have not been to this expo before and don't know how it will stack up to others. But even if it is small, it should have a lot more than any one pet shop. You can go and browse, and tuck away the info for the future when your addiction is in full force and you are on a buying spree! Also, be sure to check out the Tucson expo held every Sept - it is fairly good sized.

Good luck with Frank!

Congrats on your corn snake!
Sometimes you just fall in love.

$400? I can't imagine what you bought. You will have to show us your set up. I made 5 snake racks ( which house and heat 35 corns) for $400. That is one spoiled corn.

I've got so much $$ in my corns it's unbelievable! I tend to be one who will buy decor/climbing things vs make them or go out and find sticks to put in. Of course most of the $$ is in the caging I've got on order and quite a bit in LED lights for each viv (red ones for night).

I would still call Petco, it certainly can't hurt and that's ridiculous. I'm hoping to get in to a petshop but seeing some of this makes me wonder but I love animals so much and if I can help at a shop, then I'd like it.

I've been applying for jobs online and let me tell you, even the simplest of jobs have you filling out questions up into the hundreds in numbers! It's very time consuming. I think they need to hire people who can at least handle the animals for sale. That said, would I want to handle a tarantula? not so sure about that one!

I'm glad you got Frank! I still want the one at my Pet Supplies Plus but I'm just out of room. He's very cute & friendly.

Yes, yes, yes, I got totally carried away. lol The most expensive purchase I made was a 20L starter kit at $150. But after buying plants, substrate, food, misc. garbage, and a much smaller cage to feed him in, Frank now lives in a habitat that is much too big for him and beautifully decorated. I put all together and wouldn't you know it, he disappeared into the substrate and I haven't seen him since. hahahahahaha I will be taking pictures in a couple of days but I think he was pretty tramatized by the whole experience. I know I was. So I'm leaving him alone for now. By the way I'm pretty sure he's getting ready to shed but he's so little and I'm concerned that he may be under weight. The manager said he is a good eater but how would she know, obviously it's not her that feeds the snakes. Anyway I don't know if I should try and feed him right away or not. He's been fed on Mondays and I know they wont always eat when shedding.

Kathy Love, I look forward to meeting you at the expo and I will definitely be looking at your Okeetee's if you still have one left.

It might be cheaper not to buy those starter kits. I bought a 40 gallon tank for my first corn once she got big for $100. I bought the UTH, digital thermometers and dimmer online for much cheaper than there were in the pet stores. I have a standard rock hide (the one most people seem to have) that came from a pet store. A branch that for reptiles and a piece of driftwood. Those are the only things I ever bought from the petstore. I even get their aspen or coconut fiber online much cheaper than at the stores. I also love going to dollar stores and picking up silk plants and little things that look like my snakes would like to hide in. Much cheaper that way!

Don't worry your little guy will grow into that 20L pretty quick. I actually want rid of my 20L as my second corn looks rather cramped in there!

Just a note, of my six, I have only one that might or might not eat during shed. Nici, the little Pewter, once in a great wild will refuse, but 9 times out of 10 she will eat. So I wouldn't let that stop you in the future, although it's always a good thing to give a tiny tummy time to settle down before attempting to feed them. Having one that has a fussy tummy is not good.

Ok we are on day three of having Frank at home and I have not seen him. How long should I wait before going after him in the substrate? I'm a little concerned that the trauma of his last day at Petco might have been too much and he's... Not well... Where he's concerned I have all the patience in the world as long as I know he's okay.

If you are paranoid, pull him out and reassure yourself that he is alive. Don't handle him for 5 days or so, though. Snakes will hide for days or weeks even when they want to. This is a good thing. It means they are adjusting/healing.

Snakes move at a time slower than ours. Remember that. Let your new guy adjust slowly.

They are alot tougher than we often give them credit for :) I hate to say it but Frank may never be out and about for you. Out of my six, only Kieran, my Love male, is out on a regular basis. Well, Gailleann, even though she's 3 now, still prefers to be up in her tube, except right after eating, so I can see her on a regular basis. The other four.... most of the time I have to go looking for them when it's time to feed... unless I'm a day or two late... then they come looking for me :)

I'd leave him alone until it's time to feed him.

This is all very helpful. Thanks. Petco said they were feeding him on Mondays so I think today I'll see if I can coax him out with some food. If not then I'll at least locate him and make sure he's alive.

I spend a lot on my snakes too. I order my heat pads online, I got fake plants at hobby lobby and the dollar store, and the rest of the stuff I found outside (like branches). The cages were the most expensive part (showcase!) and I'm going to be ordering another two (a four foot and two foot) pretty soon.

Warm up the pink, and put some slits in it. That will diffuse the smell around the cage better, plus make it faster and easier to digest. Go away for a half hour. If the pink is still there after a half hour, find the snake and put it in something like a cottage cheese container with the pink and close the cover. Put in a few air holes, but DON'T put it over the heat, since your snake can't escape the heat. Leave him for an hour or so. If he doesn't eat, then wait for at least 5 days or so before you try him again.

I suggest doing all of this around dusk, since that is the most active time for corns in the wild (if temps are conducive to that timing - they change activity times somewhat in different seasons).
