Males Breeding With Males?

Hey Everyone,

I recently aquired an adult albino corn. When i got it i probed it and it probed male. Today i was cleaning cages out and placed said snake with another one of my proven breeder males while i cleaned the cage out. Within in seconds the proven male starts doing the breeding dance with the newer snake- soon he has it fully submitted and both tails are locked up. I did not witness actuall penetration however do snakes ever make 'mistakes?' i guess i wouldnt be concerned if this was a young snake however he is on his third season, has copulated with 2 females already this season- he isnt that desperate nor that horny. Did i probe wrong or does this happen sometimes?

Thanks

Males will "mate" with other males - it's a dominance/aggression behaviour, designed to teach the guy on the bottom who's boss.

If they are both actually males and the subordinate hadn't submitted, then you could have had a fight on your hands. For this reason, don't put males together. This sort of behaviour is heightened during the breeding season (i.e. now) as males will fight for females, even when there aren't any in the same building.

It's rare to probe a female as a male-usually the other way around. The probe won't go in as far on a female although there are exceptions. If it went in far and it was in fact a female, I'd be worried that it had pierced the scent gland pouch. Otherwise, I'd figure it was a male dominating another male.

probed again. It is a male with out a doubt. Used large probe, probe went more than 3/4 the length of probe- at least 18 scales down- about 2 and 3/4 inches in..........

The same behavior can be seen in many animal species, rabbits, dogs, etc. And it's not even just the males, even females will hump another female in a show of dominance, my female dog does it often. Just an interesting observation.

I've heard of male-on-male action happening before. Again, it's a dominance thing.

In the future, I would never knowingly put two males together during breeding season, even for a short period.

Do males typically lock their tails up, obviously they wont insert hemipenes. I thought they would just show dominance by holding the lesser male down, not locking tails?

It's probably male dominance; looks a LOT like "courting" behavior except they both do it :p
Once I had a brother/sister pair of "classic" corns, who looked very similar save for one or two distinct saddle markings. Once I somehow mixed up which was which and tried to place the "male" with an anery male to breed. Well I thought things looked twitchy-jerky normal until my "female" started getting on top of my anery male; then I noticed my mistake :p
(note, these were all proven breeders of their proper gender!)

Tail-locking I don't know about :p It is possible to have the odd freak female probe as a deep as a male, I suppose, though I doubt it. What does the unproven male do around a proven female?

Did you get ignored:shrugs:....I missed something right :eek1:....ahwell:bang:

Oh but I've had them try before! :eek1: They've never had actual insertion, but that guy on the bottom definitely didn't like it. :angry01: (and let it be known!)

Sounds as though everyone elses comments have sorted things out! Nothing else new or different to ad. :shrugs:

PS. The reason I've witnessed it is on occasion I'll have either a female that's not accepting the male I want her to accept OR the male isn't doing his duty with the female. I'll ad another male to the mix to see if it triggers the male to get busy or triggers the female to accept someone or both. Sometimes the guys have to sort things out before they pay attention to the female. :)

So basically exactly like humans? :sidestep:
