Meet Gizmo

Just picked this little fella up today from our local breeders expo. He's from last years hatch and was labeled as a caramel, but I was just wondering what else he might have in him.

Gizmo is definitely a caramel, but he doesn't look like he is homozygous for anything else. As for hets, you really can't tell if he is carrying any as they do not show themselves. Some people say that bloodred and caramel do show "het markers" but I don't see the bloodred one on Gizmo.

It looks like he has just eaten a large meal so I would recommend that you minimize the handling, such as when taking photos, until he digests his dinner. Too much handling can cause a regurge.

I agree with Susan, he is "just" a caramel, but a very handsome one at that! Nice pick up!!!! I always loved caramel bellies!

So one of the local breeders (not the one I got him from) thinks that he is showing for blood

I wouldn't say he was. Mostly what people see is actually the masque gene, but for some reason, it does tend to go hand-in-hand with the diffuse gene/bloodred gene. However, Gizmo's belly pattern barely shows the white line down the middle and his head pattern is as normal as normal can get, no skull or baldy pattern to be seen. He still might be het bloodred, but IMO, he is not showing the supposed het markers for bloodred.
