Melanistic Deer

Tom Tuttle

Fightin the C
Just received this pic of a black buck shot in Michigan. I'm told that melanistic deer are of the rarest form. :shrugs: I've seen piebald & albinos before but this is a first for me.
First is the melanistic
second is a piebald.

Where in michigan was that beautiful animal shot? Do you know? We sure don't have deer like that in my area, Not that I've seen anyway...lol

okay, a black deer, never seen one. Shame it was shot. But the piebald ones, yeah. My sister lives in a community in pa and she has at least three herds roaming inside the community that have at least several piebald doe's in each. And some of those have had piebald babies. Catch a quick glance they look like cows at first, then your brain registers, oh wow those are deer.

Now that would be so cool to see! Here in michigan where I live we don't get to see anything but the regular white tails, which for me is cool in itself. I never get tired of seeing animals in thier natural surroundings! But then I don't get sick of seeing that venison in the freezer every year that my son aquires for me either.. :sidestep:

No wonder when people keep shooting them... lol :sidestep:

Beautiful animal, or would have been when it was alive.

The piebald is a beauty, too.

I am in now way against hunting deer. How ever pliss I would agree with you in that if I saw that deer I would have probably passed on shooting it. But hunting in itself does not bother me. I would much rather have people shooting the deer, providing a quick death vs. having the deer have a lingering slow death from starvation. There may be states that don't have the over population Michigan has but we do have one and hunting is the best conservation alternative to starvation...

Nice pics Tom. I've seen piebald deer while bike riding through the Cleveland metro park system, but never a black one.

Melanistic would've been pretty if it wasn't shot.
But then again, all deer are. Look much better alive than dead. Yep.

I'd have to agree with others...It's a shame it was shot and killed. His rack isn't even that great. Should have let him go for a couple more seasons to spread those genes and allow him time to grow.

They taste better pan-fried coated in flour with garlic salt and pepper.

Thanks for sharing that pic of the melanistic. It's a wonder to me that there aren't more melanistic deer as it would seem to help in survival and their lack of existence should have nothing to do with this one animal being shot. :shrugs:

It's also a wonder to me that the human species has the audacity to think that by not allowing hunters to shoot albino or piebald deer that we are somehow saving them. Even to the point there are a couple of herds which are completely (?) closed off to outside introduction of genes (and predation). Albinism/Pie-baldism does not help an animal survive in nature and they are unnaturally being protected in my humble opinion.

You know, some people actually hunt for the meat, and not for the rack. Plus younger deer are tastier.

Albino Fawn

A friend of mine forwarded an email to me with pictures of an albino fawn. The email says it's from Texas. Isn't it just the coolest?!

Noooooo...Really? THAT must be why my Fiance fills our chest freezer with a couple hundred pounds of deer meat every year. Who'd a thunk?

I can just about guarantee you that deer was shot because someone thought a black deer would be cool to hang on their wall. Not saying it isn't, but I think he could have been let go for a while longer. My Fiance hunts that way. Doesn't go crazy shootin' everything in site.

I agree with Dean's deer cooking! Yum! Just had that last week. :)

Not THIS Dean. I love venison, but I don't hunt and I CERTAINLY can't cook. With all these bleepin' snakes, I don't even have time to FISH anymore. ;)

I saw that melanistic deer pic a few months ago, and I thought that it was very cool.

I ate moose for the first time a couple of years ago, and I have to say that it was about the tastiest thing I've ever eaten (I'm definitely a carnivore).

Antelope stroganoff, mmm! I never really got into carnivorous/omnivorous game like bear or raccoon, though. Ick.
