Mice bursting open....

The last 2 mice i thawed out burst open while in the water to thaw. Is this normal? I threw out the second one that popped open ( second feeding) cause the first one was just way to messy when Osiris ate it. I dont think the water was to hot. It was just hot tap water. Mice around here is very expensive. $5 each so really dont want to be throwing them away lol

Personally I'd seek out a new feeder rodent supplier. I've read about this happening to low quality pinks, but even that was them exploding after being coiled. Upon slicing other pinks from the same batch open, the buyer found green insides which could be indicative of freezing-thawing-refreezing. $5 a mouse doesn't go unnoticed, but I'd suggest dissecting one and giving the insides a good look-through.

Rupturing in normal, hot tap water is a different situation, but I don't think hot tap water should rupture anything how you described.

They wasnt green inside. I made sure i cut it open the rest of the way to poke around ( tk god i dont have a weak stomach lol) The skin seems VERY flimsy. The only other pet store from me is 4 1/2 hrs from me so the mice will be thawed out before i get home. I bought some packed it in frozen bottles of water and put it in a freezer type foil bag and when i got home from the 4 1.2 hr drive all the mice was thawed. But that isnt the mice that bust open.

yeah.. that dosent sound right at all, the closest i have ever come to this was having blood come out of the nose of a pinky this past week when my little milk snake coiled the neck out of his pinky.. but like stated this was after it was thawed, the thawing prosses itself shouldnt make the mice explode..

I second cutting one open and checking them out!!

Hmmm, maybe try out a better quality cooler, and a bag of ice and then some freezer packs? (I have never tried this myself, and i dont truly know if it would be a good idea.) I do know that most people say that when traveling with them you should use dry ice but i have NO IDEA as to where you would purchase that..

The only other thought I could come up with would be to order online, but depending on how many snakes you have it might not even be worth the shipping..

I wish I could help more!
But i'm still learning the ups and down my self here and there, lol!
I do hope this helps some though!

tks for the tip. unfort i cant be carrying a cooler full of ice when i do go to the pet store cause its for work and i have a pt and nurse and etc with me so i have to be discrete lol. But i dont have anymore of the mice that burst open. That was the mice the ppl gave me who i bought osiris off of. So next wk he will be fed the mice i bought. I know it was thawed out but it was still kept in freezer bag with ice packs and the mice was still cold so i just put them in my deep freeze soon as i got home.

Yes. I thaw under slowly running hot water until the mouse is supple and warm all the way through. If you hold it in your hand, with your hand closed, you should be able to feel if the center is warm. Definitely less than 30 minutes. Maybe 15 for a single mouse?

I had a large mouse burst a couple weeks ago, the lower abdomen split and the innards started coming out. The snake didn't mind at all though. I had let it sit in the hot running tap water close to an hour, so I think that's why it happened.

Maybe try the bag method. Put the mouse in a ziploc, and leave it in hot water and thaw as you would. Perhaps the mice were already a little aged, since they were just given to you from the breeder (not making assumptions about them, just stating possibilities), and the water eroded the skin enough.

I had this happen for a while when I would use the microwave to heat the water (only for a minute)...ended up being too hot and the mice would pop open. Now I just use HOT tap water and that seems to work much better.

I use to thaw mine using water and i had a few where the insides came out, now i get them out the night before and let them thaw naturally in room temperature. Its much easier and dont have to dry them afterwards and since i have been doing it like this there has been no insides coming out.

Also i think you should start your own mice supply business, you would probably have a lot of customers if they all got to drive 4.5 hours!!

Tks for the idea. I will DEF use this method on tuesday when i feed osiris again.

I've thawed at room temp but not overnight, that's to long to leave them out. An hour or so on the counter and then a quick hot water soak works well.

Putting them in a snack size ziplock bag and popping them in the fridge to thaw overnight works well too. Then before feeding just plop the bag in hot water for a few minutes to warm them up.
