Mites! Help!

Here's a link for the Nix mite treatment. http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52545

Overall, cheaper than Provent a Mite.

Since they have spread, I wouls suggest treating your whole house. You're going to have to keep treating two more times, 5-7 days apart.

You can use food grade Diatomaceous Earth on your floors, that is not harmful to other pets. You sprinkle it on the floor, vacuum up. DE causes a physical reaction to anything with an exo skeleton (mites, fleas, spiders, ants, etc). It basically cuts into their exo skeleton, dehydrates them, & they die.

I pre-treat all of my bedding, just in case. (Knock on wood) I've had no problems since I started doing that.

I have a large bin with a hinged lid that I store bedding in. What I do is gradually add the bedding in the bin, & I spray the bedding with the mite treatment, let it air dry a bit, then add more bedding & spray that. I mix it all up & make sure it's dry before I put it away.
Then, as I got to use the bedding, it's already treated. I did this with Provent a Mite, I haven't tried it with the Nix treatment yet.
I recently ran out of my PAM & picked up the Nix.

Well, last Sunday we sprayed them all down with Nix. So far so good. Our two worst, Zeus and Monty, had dead mites all over the paper towels the next morning, so that's a good sign, right? Last night I noticed a few more dead ones in Zeus's tank, but didn't get a chance to look at Monty.

Hera has been clean for a while now, and I took her out and let her crawl over my lap. She loved that. Poor thing has been craving attention.

Thanks everyone for your help! I do believe we've finally solved the issue!

You need to understand the life cycle of mites if you want to control them..
http://www.vpi.com/publications/the_life_history_of_snake_mites

As you can see, mites can travel.. The best way to contain them is to wipe a thin layer of vaseline around the openings to your viv/rub. (remember vents and air holes also.)
Mites get bogged down in it and can't travel across..

And I would suggest getting a rub, treated with PAM the next time you pick up any snakes... Start quarantine properly at the onset.. You cross contaminated before you even got started...

I treat all my bedding by freezing it for a day or two before using it. Its a great preventative measure.

Mites, I believe are species specific but can travel via other animals. So at least your cats arent infected either.

Also, quarantine shouldn't be in the same room, it should always be in a separate room for reasons like this. Mites have an uncanny ability of getting pretty much anywhere!

It also works best if you treat and clean everything in one day, and then repeat the treatment in a few days. Continue the every few days, until they are gone. Sevens dust and Diatomaceous Earth, both work on mites and insects. I have used both with my pet pigeons as a preventive measure.

Good Luck!!
