Mites Treatment

He may have gotten some dust in his nostrils. Maybe rinse his head off a little better. If he still has some mites crawling on him, maybe he needed a few minutes more of treatment. But I would give him several days to recover before treating again with any insecticide. In a week or so, do it again, but this time take him out of the sack after the same amount of time, but wait another 10 minutes before rinsing.

Did you treat everything in the cage too? You could probably put some of the dust under the bedding, where it can kill mites, but not affect the lungs of the snake. Try to avoid you or the snake breathing the dust any more than necessary. If he still has mites, you can give him a couple of long soaks while you are waiting for the next treatment. That will kill most, but not all, of the mites, and make him comfortable while waiting. Be sure to set up the bath so there is no danger of him drowning. You may find some mites gathered around the nose and face to avoid drowning. You can wipe those off by hand, allowing you to get rid of MOST of them immediately.

Yes, I cleaned the cage and his hide with bleach water. I also vacuumed the room with flea/tick killer. I had him on the reptibark before but now have newspaper and a moist rag in the viv-much cheaper than buying reptibark each time. I normally fill the container about half full of water for his bath. He does have LOTS of mites around his nose and face. The Sevin got some of them on his face-I notice I can actually see his nose now. What is the average amount of time I will have to treat him with Sevin before I can see any results on him? And treating him more than once with Sevin won't hurt him if I wait a few days/week between treatments?

When I used it, I left my snakes in a sterilite overnight with a sprinkling of sevin dust on the bottom.

Worked for me, I dunno. That was the only treatment I had to do.

Back when I used Sevin (remember, the last time I used it was 1998, so I am stretching my memory here!), all of the mites were gone after the first treatment, although I still retreated anyway. But I probably left the snakes in the Sevin for longer than you did. But since I can't remember exactly how long I left them in it, better to do it a shorter time like you did - better safe than sorry! You can always re-do it later. I have retreated after one week without any problems. I just picked that time for retreatment - it is not magic. Since it is not registered for this use by the government, I don't think there is any published scientific info out there so far, just trial and error results.

If anyone else has retreated more frequently, they may want to post positive or negative results. I suspect it would be fine to do so, but I don't want to say that because I have not done it myself.

But I would be careful about the other flea products you mentioned if they have different active ingredients than Sevin. Try to make sure your snake is not exposed to them on top of the Sevin treatment. Different chemicals can cause interactions that are worse than a double dose of just one chemical. I am not a vet or chemist, so can't do more than just advise caution.

Anyone else care to post their experience or knowledge?

I will try to retreat him in a few days and hopefully see results. Should I sprinkle some Sevin under the newspaper or is that too much? Since treating him with Sevin I haven't treated him with any other pesticide. I have been sticking to one treatment at a time. After retreating him, I will definiately post my results. This has been an ongoing task to get rid of those little buggers!! :twoguns:

does he hide under the paper? If so, you might want to watch it. I don't think letting him lay in Sevin for an extended time would be good for him (i.e. several days), but I dunno...

Sevin

I only left him in the bag of Sevin long enough to get him covered. Then I took him out and let him sit for about 5-10 minutes. Then rinsed and gave him a bath. Hopefully with retreatment he will get better. So far he hasn't discovered "under" the paper yet..but I am sure in time he will.

This probably a dumb question im asking because I have no clue lol anyways is this nix the same as regular lice shampoo? If not whats the difference I have a baby corn I think has mites I thought I seen a dark colored bug it wasnt moving though. So small hard to tell if it was a bug or just dust. But hes been laying in the water bowl alot lately and its not because of temps.Any help or point me in the right direction to cure this the correct way with hurting my pour little guy. Thanks

Ok can you dilute the shampoo and use it?Or does it have to strong chemicals in it to put on the snake? Thanks for any help

Ok after not knowing for sure if mine had mites I finally seen one crawling ugh.
