Well i saw this thread, http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=77387, And love it!

But plexi was a little expensive so i used the make-ur-own-window-screen-kits and made two little squares to fit inside, added some hinges and a handle and vualla! oh and the locks and screen lid locks from petco...

everything was bought at Lowes except the screen locks...

Ive make a few of these and they work wonderfully! Cant complain :)

This is interesting! About how much did one of these modifications cost to do?

the kit was around 12$ and there is more then enough to do four cages. the handles were on sale as were the hinges, 2.50$ for four hinges 2.00$ a handle...

This is baffling me... What kind of product did you use?? Can you maybe post a link or pic of the product itself? I'm going to Google right now. This is VERY cool and could be exactly what I was looking for :)

I've never seen make your own screen kits, but I do have a couple of commercial screen tank tops that open that way and have done the same thing in the past. Did you get little rubber feet to stick on to the "bottom" of yours? That's what I did so there was air flow for the UTH.

I found that the snakes preferred to poo right there at the screen & that it would sometimes leak out onto the pressboard shelf it was sitting on.

Nice job! Looks great!

for some reason its more expensive online but heres the kit.

the screen frame itself looks like this and comes in black or white.

use a hacksaw to cut four sides to ur desired length and it comes with these little corner deal-ys.

and i already had the screen itself all and all it seems very expensive but except for the extra handles and corner things it will do a ton of cages.

I am in the proses of making another of these for one of my yearlings, ill take pictures and post a real dyi soon, i was original planning to sell these but since every 10 gall is different they have to be custom made to fit.

Thanks for the interest guys :)

Do you have these stacked? If you do, can you post pictures? I want to make this if I get more snakes in the future.

If there is trouble with poos being right up by the screen, you might put in a little 1 1/2-2" ledge of plexi right behind the doors and seal it in with silicone. It would also keep the substrate in better. We did ledges on our shelf and they work really well- saves us some vaccuuming trouble!
You can kind of see it in these pictures.

It will wear a hole in your pocket for sure! But our lowes and ACE hardware carry small sheets that aren't too bad. Less than $15 I think.

Oh, just kidding. Looked online at screen kits and I see you roll the spline into the groove to hold the screen in place. But does it hold strong enough to prevent the snake from pushing the screen back out?

I cant push through it with my hands.. and none of my snakes have been able to either, if u look at commercial cages. like gecko cages were screen is on 4 of 6 sides... its just screen squares glued together... :)

Modified Ronon's tank to have doors kinda like this.

Looks pretty nice, and it's easier to get in the tank. Only one problem, which didn't even occur to me...Ronon is a nervous snake and tends to strike out at times. He struck and got stuck in the screen. I managed to get him loose but I'll have to keep a close eye on him to make sure he didn't hurt himself. Having second thoughts now. :shrugs: Would probably be fine for my corn as he never strikes, but this guy might have to go back to the regular screen top.

Hmm, actually, I suppose I could just buy two pieces of acrylic, score/break them down to size, and glue them on. It's not as if the tank is airtight, so that might be enough ventilation. Or if not, I could drill a few holes in the acrylic. Maybe in the corner or something, fake decorative. XD Ronon seems okay so far, though it's hard to look close since he's got that nervous attitude.

There is a metal screen u can buy at lowes vs the nilon, i would try re sreaning it with that so that his teeth cant get stuck. Looks awesome!
