morph breeding advice please, esp aztec

This is my lav, Lila. She's pretty zig-zagged. Yet another snake I haven't photographed in recent history...My tri-color hoggy is zig-zagged too.

She is gorgeous, Nanci! What a beautiful combination of different bits of colour and pattern. Do you have the hoggy picture to hand by any chance, too? :)

Thanks again for mentioning that Morph guide book. Though I despair about genetics, I am fascinated by them at the same time and will really enjoy lerning more about them. That book looks good!

Hi all,

Marinneli, I would love to see the pics of your aztecs! They are my favourite morph really :)

Here's Lenny

And HERE you'll find more of him.

Sachamamma, do you have the book Cornsnake Morph Guide? You'd enjoy reading about neural crest migration! It will change the way you look at Zig zag and Aztec.

You got me all curious... I tried to google but didn't find any information concernin this. Could you please tell what says in the book?

Is it suspected or even examined that aztec pattern is caused by some neural crest migration - what ever that means?

aztec

Patterns can be caused by mold when incubating eggs, you can produce aztecs from breeding your aztec to your females. If the pattern was caused by mold it cant be passed down to the off spring

Quoting from Cornsnake Morph Guide 2007 "The aztec pattern may be formed as the result of spontaneous changes in destiny, in cells that normally all form the same blotch. There are often areas where cells appear to have "changed destinies" before the saddle has completely expanded, so that areas of ground color are formed instead of the saddle color. There can also be subdivided areas, as if parts of a single saddle have broken away from the main group to form their own smaller "independent" blotches."

I'm not retyping the whole chapter, but here are a couple sentences from Cornsnake Morph Guide, 2007, to explain how pattern cells disperse durimg neural migration. "In the early development of embryos, one group of cells, known as the neural crest, differentiates itself. This group of cells eventually becomes the nervous system, brain, spinal cord, eyes and the pigment cells on the skin...The cells that create the pattern start out approximately where the brain is, and then migrate in two groups (one on the left side and one on the right side) down the center of the back, moving toward the tail and the nose. While migrating, they divide into subgroups and multiply. These cells then migrate "downward" around the sides and eventually reach the center of the belly." The book has cool diagrams of it all.

So we have eggs!

Hi there, hello to everybody ho was involved in this thread.

Just wanted to let you know that I have now had 6 healthy eggs in an incubator for 2 weeks, the mother is the normal female, peculiarly called Aztec. The father - unknown or could be iether from the two males concerned. What happened with both of my females, I put them together with males but didnt see any hook ups, then tried later again and just to be on the safe side, tried them with the other male aswell. In the end I witnessed a hook up of the snow female with the anery aztec male, and the eggs should be out soon. But with the normal female I havent seen the event so the babies should be a surprise.

The most amazing experience so far: A couple of days ago I candled the eggs for the first time ever. I just picked up one particular one which seemed to be "calling" to me. When I focused my eye, to my amazement I saw something like 2 mm embryo of a baby snake wriggling wildly in the shaft of light from my shielded torch. Could this be true? It looked unreal! I felt like Im having an insigh into a womb and there is this very lively tiny being waving at me madly!

So this is an absolutely gorgeous experience - having (snake) babies, for thye first time ever. This tiny life is so miraculous and precious!!!

Just wanted to share, thank you for listenning, I will post some photos again and keep you informed about their progress.
