hi ive read a few forums that have mentioned snakes musking but what does that mean exactly? when i was younger i had a corn snake and so did my sister. mine was very docile and sweet and hers was the complete opposite...you couldnt even look into his tank with out him trying to attack you and the only time he was out of this tank was during cleanings and even that was a challange...he would go crazy try to bite and released a musky smell that made me want to slam my head in the wall. ive never understood why that happened...we just came to the conlusion that he was not a corn snake and the pet store had lied to us about the little vicious guy, we ended up donating him to a license snake handler since we had no idea if we were caring for him properly and he was really mean...but yeah hehe do corn snakes musk or what?! im confused yet releaved to know that my sisters old snake was not the only one in the world to do that........hmmmmmmmmm...anyone know if he might not have been a corn snake at all?! or do corns musk when they are angry? :punch:

its a liquidy substance much like their urates that has a quite unpleasant smell. I would assume it was to give the smell of decay to in a very basic way, play dead.

it may also taste really bad preventing it from being eaten much like monarchs eat milkweed as larvae and apparently taste bad to birds as adults, and the birds have learned not to eat them.

do corn snakes musk? cuz i wasnt too sure if the snake we had was a corn, and my corn never had musked before but my sisters would musk everytime we took him out of the tank or anytime he was stressed.

I have one of my girls that musks but only when she is in blue and I pull her out for feedings she still eats well but musks EVERYWHERE.

As Jcapacity has said, corns can musk, usually just stressed out hatchlings though.

Its a common defense against predators in snakes, some species go further still, often defacating (pooping) and turning onto their backs feigning death ;)
